Public Space in Transition
Teheran-ro in Seoul and Mediaspree area in Berlin are pristine examples for public spaces with a history of rapid change in the context of broader political and economic transitions. Dahae Lee shows that in such a transitional context, the public sector alone is incapable to provide and manage public space. Hence, it engages private sector entities in the form of privately owned public space/s (POPS). By analysing the planning instruments used for POPS in both cases, their uniqueness as well as strengths and weaknesses are revealed. Based on the results this study offers a number of policy recommendations for cities that encounter similar problems.

Building Resilience to Natural Hazards in the Context of Climate Change
Urban resilience and building resilience are “hot topics” of research and practice on sustainability in the context of climate change. The edited volume advances the “state of art” of urban resilience research through focusing on three important processes of building resilience: knowledge integration, implementation, and learning. In the volume, knowledge integration primarily refers to the combination of specialized knowledge domains (e.g., flood risk management and urban planning). Implementation refers to realized specific changes of the building stock and related green, blue and grey infrastructures at local level (e.g., for dealing with rising temperatures and heat waves at the neighborhood scale in cities). Learning requires moving beyond single projects and experiments of resilience to enhance sustainability at city and regional scale. The editors adopt an interdisciplinary approach to this volume of the Springer series on resilience. The volume includes contributions from civil engineering, physical geography, the social sciences, and urban planning.
The ‘New Normal’ in Planning, Governance and Participation
This book offers a unique and timely contribution, informed by responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, to unpack the intertwined challenges that planning needs to cope with in the future. It argues that the pandemic and post-pandemic periods, in their successive waves of restrictions and social distancing, have disrupted ‘normal’ practices but have also contributed to shaping a ‘new normal’. The new normal is emerging, re-configuring, and prioritizing the substantive objects of planning and its governance and participatory processes.
