The Sicilian Mafia

Blood ceremonies, obscure symbols, elaborate codes, brutal executions: the arcane remnants of a defunct culture? The Mafia, this book suggests, is not nearly as bizarre as all that, not nearly as remote as we might think. In fact, as Diego Gambetta's analysis unfolds, the Mafia begins to resemble any other business. In a society where trust is in short supply, this business sells protection, a guarantee of safe conduct for commercial and social transactions. It grudgingly shares the market with other concerns like itself, of which it is merely the most successful. The author develops his elegant economic theory with ample evidence, much of it based on the remarkable work done by Judge Giovan...

Radiomics in Gastric Cancer

Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the most common malignancies worldwide. It is particularly challenging due to common detection at the advanced stages of the diseases preventing potential therapeutic and treatment strategies for patients. Common forms of treatment include chemotherapy which has been found to improve the survival rate and overall quality of life for patients with unresectable, locally advanced or at the metastatic stages of the disease. However, chemotherapy has also proven to cause significant side effects in some patients. Lymphatic metastasis has been found to be common in gastric cancer patients. Lymph vascular invasion (LVI) has been identified to be associated to the infiltration of tumor cells in the arteries, veins or lymphatic vessels. This has been identified to prompt local recurrence and the distant metastasis of various tumors. This has led to the LVI status as an independent prognostic factor and studies have found the occurrence of pathological LVI is associated with gastric cancer progression and linked to poor clinical prognosis and low survival rate.

Hepatocellular Carcinoma

This open access book offers a comprehensive review of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with a particular focus on the pathobiology and clinical aspects of the disease, including diagnosis and treatment. HCC is becoming one of the most common causes of cancer-related death worldwide. It is the fifth most common malignancy in men and the ninth in women, with an estimated 500,000 to 1 million new cases annually around the world. Independent of its cause, cirrhosis is considered a major clinical and histopathological risk factor for HCC development. Five percent of all cirrhotic patients develop HCC every year. Diagnostic tools for HCC include blood tests, high-quality imaging studies and liver biopsy. The treatment of HCC depends on the size and location of the HCC and includes surgical resection, liver transplantation, endovascular approaches, percutaneous ablation, and medical treatments. The book is organized into four parts--overview, diagnosis, management strategies, and recommendations--and aims to provide surgeons and clinicians with a valuable resource for complete and up-to-date research on the clinical aspects and management of HCC.

Multimodality Imaging and Intervention in Oncology

This book provides the reader with a focused review of multimodality imaging strategies (radiology and molecular imaging) in staging and re-staging the major types of cancer (i.e. thyroid, breast, colon-rectum, lung, prostate, pancreas, liver, head and neck, and hematological cancer), including rare neoplasms. In addition to presenting the possible diagnostic pathways for all oncologic diseases, the book identifies those interventions currently available in clinical practice (these being a branch of interventional radiology), while also examining and detailing molecular radiotherapy strategies. The work has an interdisciplinary appeal and, thanks to its highly informative and cutting-edge coverage, professionals as well as advanced students and residents in radiology, oncology and surgery will find it of particular interest.

Imaging of the Liver and Intra-hepatic Biliary Tract

This is the first of two volumes that together provide a comprehensive analysis of the embryology, normal anatomy, and pathology of the liver and intrahepatic biliary tract as seen on modern diagnostic imaging techniques. In this volume, readers will find fundamental information on embryology, radiological anatomy, and anatomic variants. A thorough introduction is then provided to each imaging technique, including ultrasound, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear medicine techniques, angiography, and interventional radiology. The remainder of the volume is devoted to non-tumoral pathology of the liver and intra-hepatic biliary tract. For each disease, readers will find full description of the roles of individual imaging modalities and extensive illustration of the imaging appearances. The authors are world-leading experts in the field, and the book will be an ideal reference for all members of the radiology community, from residents to experts. It will also aid clinicians during their daily practice.

The progressive increase of the average age of the population, of life expectancy and the improvement of the quality of life are common phenomena in many countries of the World. Over the years, the management of older persons seems to have had an increasing impact both on the socio-economic and on the medical-health level. Medicine, in all its branches, has in fact focused more and more on the health conditions of the...
