Creating Passion – Leaving the warm water

Often it is not the application of management dogmas. Rather, Daniel Bloch sees the difference in awakening a feeling of creativity and passion that gives small companies in particular the strength to be at the forefront of the market. In a relaxed style, he tells episodes from his company that lead to a major future project. With this approach and a look beyond pure economics, he creates a new concept for successful entrepreneurship based on people.

The essays gathered here recommend the work of Ernest Bloch as a challenge to older models of historical materialism and utopian emancipation and give specific examples of how Bloch's work can contribute to current debates about utopia, nationalism, collective memory, and the complex relationship between ideology and everyday life.

During a private trip to Singapore, German federal police officer Alexander Granger is approached by Interpol agent Brandon Song regarding overlapping investigations in Hamburg and the city-state. In both cities, commercial containers have been found with strange appliances built into them. While they are investigating these containers, they are shot at. In the South China Sea, tensions are boiling between China and Taiwan. There are indications that the two nations may be getting closer to a serious military conflict. A lawyer in Boston is asked to write a legal brief which could rattle the U.S. Presidency. Meanwhile, commercial containers are loaded onto trucks and head from Vancouver towards the Rocky Mountain States. On their way to Montana, North Dakota and Wyoming, the truck drivers leave a trail of death. Alexander Granger, with the help of Interpol in Singapore and police in Germany, follows the trail of the mysterious containers, trying to connect the dots between the various events and to prevent a global crisis.

In the last few years it was seen the emergence of various new quantum phenomena specifically related with electronic or optical confinement on a sub-wavelength-size. Fast developments simultaneously occurred in the field of Atomic Physics, notably through various regimes of Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics, and in Solid State Physics, with advances in Quantum Well technology and Nanooptoelectronics. Simultaneously, breakthroughs in Near-Field Optics provided new tools which should be widely applicable to these domains. However, the key concepts used to describe these new and partly related effects are often very different and specific of the Community involved in a given development. It has b...

Voices in the Wilderness

Despite the Modernist search for new and innovative aesthetics and rejection of traditional tonality, several twentieth century composers have found their own voice while steadfastly relying on the aesthetics and techniques of Romanticism and 19th century composition principles. Musicological and reference texts have regarded these composers as isolated exceptions to modern thoughts of composition_exceptions of little importance, treated simplistically and superficially. Music critic and scholar Walter Simmons, however, believes these composers and their works should be taken seriously. They are worthy of more scholarly consideration, and deserve proper analysis, assessment, and discussion i...
