A variety of productions and representations of Canadian identities are the central theme that runs through this book. The different contributions explore imagined spaces by considering Canadian music, poetry and novels; they engage with political space by addressing various ways in which the people of Canada have made claims to different regions in the distant and recent past; and they address lived spaces, and their actual and symbolic meanings. It is an unusual book as it encompasses the writings by those studying the arts and literature as well as writings by social scientists, and it includes both English and French-speaking scholars. The richness that can be found in this multitude of perspectives and approaches to exploring Canadian space is characteristic of the way in which Canadian Studies is practiced nowadays. It is therefore an appropriate volume to celebrate 20 years of Canadian Studies in the Netherlands.
Incorporated on October 16, 1673, Dunstable, Massachusetts, was purchased from the Wameset and Naticook Indians for UK 20AA sterling. It was named in honor of Mrs. Edward Tyng, who had emigrated from a community of the same name in England. The Tyngs were early founders of Dunstable, a town that began in hardship. Every house in Dunstable began as a watch house, and every man was a soldier. Dunstable men were among the first to prepare for the American Revolution, and many were sent to fight in the Civil War. Discover the details of this early history in an unprecedented collection of images compiled by local historians Susan Tully and Susan Psaledakis. The images in this collection date as far back as 1743 and span a period of two centuries. Included are pictures of the many historic homes in Dunstable as well as notable people and events in the community.
In the 1970s, Hydro-Qu?bec declared “We Are Hydro-Qu?b?cois.” The slogan symbolized the intimate ties that had emerged between hydroelectric development in the North and French Canadian aspirations in the South. Caroline Desbiens focuses on the first phase of the James Bay hydroelectric project to explore how this culture of hydroelectricity hastened the erasure of Aboriginal homelands and the manipulation of Northern Quebec’s material landscape. She concludes that truly sustainable resource development will depend on all actors bringing an awareness of their cultural histories and visions of nature, North, and nation to the negotiating table.
