Algebraic Statistics

Algebraic statistics uses tools from algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, combinatorics, and their computational sides to address problems in statistics and its applications. The starting point for this connection is the observation that many statistical models are semialgebraic sets. The algebra/statistics connection is now over twenty years old, and this book presents the first broad introductory treatment of the subject. Along with background material in probability, algebra, and statistics, this book covers a range of topics in algebraic statistics including algebraic exponential families, likelihood inference, Fisher's exact test, bounds on entries of contingency tables, design of experiments, identifiability of hidden variable models, phylogenetic models, and model selection. With numerous examples, references, and over 150 exercises, this book is suitable for both classroom use and independent study.

Approximate Commutative Algebra

Approximate Commutative Algebra is an emerging field of research which endeavours to bridge the gap between traditional exact Computational Commutative Algebra and approximate numerical computation. The last 50 years have seen enormous progress in the realm of exact Computational Commutative Algebra, and given the importance of polynomials in scientific modelling, it is very natural to want to extend these ideas to handle approximate, empirical data deriving from physical measurements of phenomena in the real world. In this volume nine contributions from established researchers describe various approaches to tackling a variety of problems arising in Approximate Commutative Algebra.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Mathematical Aspects of Computer and Information Sciences, MACIS 2015, held in Berlin, Germany, in November 2015. The 48 revised papers presented together with 7 invited papers were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. The papers are grouped in topical sections on curves and surfaces, applied algebraic geometry, cryptography, verified numerical computation, polynomial system solving, managing massive data, computational theory of differential and difference equations, data and knowledge exploration, algorithm engineering in geometric computing, real complexity: theory and practice, global optimization, and general session.

Software for Algebraic Geometry

Software for Algebraic Geometry

Algorithms in algebraic geometry go hand in hand with software packages that implement them. Together they have established the modern field of computational algebraic geometry which has come to play a major role in both theoretical advances and applications. Over the past fifteen years, several excellent general purpose packages for computations in algebraic geometry have been developed, such as, CoCoA, Singular and Macaulay 2. While these packages evolve continuously, incorporating new mathematical advances, they both motivate and demand the creation of new mathematics and smarter algorithms. This volume reflects the workshop “Software for Algebraic Geometry” held in the week from 23 to 27 October 2006, as the second workshop in the thematic year on Applications of Algebraic Geometry at the IMA. The papers in this volume describe the software packages Bertini, PHClab, Gfan, DEMiCs, SYNAPS, TrIm, Gambit, ApaTools, and the application of Risa/Asir to a conjecture on multiple zeta values. They offer the reader a broad view of current trends in computational algebraic geometry through software development and applications.

3D Printing in Mathematics

This volume is based on lectures delivered at the 2022 AMS Short Course “3D Printing: Challenges and Applications” held virtually from January 3–4, 2022. Access to 3D printing facilities is quickly becoming ubiquitous across college campuses. However, while equipment training is readily available, the process of taking a mathematical idea and making it into a printable model presents a big hurdle for most mathematicians. Additionally, there are still many open questions around what objects are possible to print, how to design algorithms for doing so, and what kinds of geometries have desired kinematic properties. This volume is focused on the process and applications of 3D printing for...
