Blisner, IL

A pseudo-sequel to 'Blisner, Ill.', 'Blisner, IL' is a self-published photobook by Daniel Shea exploring processes of deindustrialisation in the Rust Belt of America. This volume also explores the industrial history and post-industrial fallout of the once prosperous Southern Illinois town, but also frames its predecessor, 'Blisner, Ill.', as a historical document from which to draw information at the present day site.

Our thoughts are meaningful. We think about things in the outside world; how can that be so? This is one of the deepest questions in contemporary philosophy. Ever since the 'cognitive revolution', states with meaning-mental representations-have been the key explanatory construct of the cognitive sciences. But there is still no widely accepted theory of how mental representations get their meaning. Powerful new methods in cognitive neuroscience can now reveal information processing in the brain in unprecedented detail. They show how the brain performs complex calculations on neural representations. Drawing on this cutting-edge research, Nicholas Shea uses a series of case studies from the cognitive sciences to develop a naturalistic account of the nature of mental representation. His approach is distinctive in focusing firmly on the 'subpersonal' representations that pervade so much of cognitive science. The diversity and depth of the case studies, illustrated by numerous figures, make this book unlike any previous treatment. It is important reading for philosophers of psychology and philosophers of mind, and of considerable interest to researchers throughout the cognitive sciences.

Can We Talk?

To many, the angry protestors at town hall meetings, the death threats toward politicians, the inflammatory language online and over the airwaves, and the language of politician themselves are making America politics an ugly, mean-spirited, and nasty affair. Can We Talk? presents a dream team of scholars and journalists who ask: Is politics really as nasty as many news commentators perceive? What are forces are changing the political discourse and who is to blame? How will this change transform the very nature of our democracy? Civility in politics is one of the great issues of our day, making Can We Talk? a must-read for all students of American government.

The book presents a photographic account of "what happened to a single Rust Belt town in Southern Illinois as it is increasingly de-industrialized. It's a condensed 100-120-year narrative told in book form. The town itself is fictional, but it's based on real places and real historical events that happened in Illinois."--Interview with the artist in Chicago Magazine, http://www.chicagomag.com/Chicago-Magazine/C-Notes/October-2012/Q-A-Photographer-Daniel-Shea-and-His-New-Work-Blisner-Ill/, viewed on May 14, 2013.

Photography Is Magic (Signed Edition)

Photography Is Magic draws together current ideas about the use of photography as an invaluable medium in the contemporary art world. Edited and with an essay by leading photography writer and curator Charlotte Cotton, this critical publication surveys the work of a diverse group of artists, many working at the borders of the "art world" and the "photography world," all of whom are engaged with experimental ideas concerning photographic practice and its place in a shifting photographic landscape being reshaped by digital techniques. Readers are shown the scope of photographic possibilities in the context of the contemporary creative process. From Michele Abeles and Walead Beshty to Daniel Go...
