The Ideas, Identity and Art of Daniel Spoerri
The term “artistic animator” is inspired by the definition “Kunstanimator” given to Spoerri by his longstanding friend Karl Gerstner during an interview with Katerina Vatsella in 1995. Wherever he went, Spoerri was capable of inspiring others to make art, and at the same time he absorbed, interiorized and transformed ideas from others. His fluctuating memberships during late Modernism (Zero, Nouveau Réalisme, Fluxus, Mail Art) explain why some areas of this work have not yet received their due attention and their connection to the whole picture has often eluded scholarly inquiry. Daniel Spoerri: Black on Wise
Daniel Spoerri made his name as a visual artist with his 'snare pictures' and as a pioneer of Eat Art. In his 80th year, Spoerri pays homage to Hans Arp, after whom the Arp Museum is named, with his work entitled Wei t Du, schwarzt Du? (Black on Wise), which is also the title of one of Arp's poems. The exhibition in the Arp Museum and the accompanying catalogue feature 130 distinguished works dating from the 1960s right up to Spoerri's most recent works. Included in the exhibition are the large-scale Prillwitz Idols bronzes together with a variety of wooden and bronze sculptures, fascinating picture series and the famous 'snare pictures'. For the first time also we have an opportunity to see surprising objects from Spoerri's private collections, illustrating his love of magical objects and identifying him as a passionate 'archaeologist of flea markets'. Daniel Spoerri's main inspiration has been culinary art: what we eat, what we eat on, how we arrange our meals and what is left behind. His works are witty, ironic and nostalgic but also invested with a touch of existential angst linked to transitoriness. Daniel Spoerri perceives the world of objects as a great dictionary that conceals sophisticated meanings; it is one that he has mastered to perfection. His ear for meaning, combined with the philosophical sense of humour, characteristic of Fluxus artists together with the gift of beautiful excess, a trait of true gourmands, all combine into his artistic flair.
