The Abuse of Property
A fundamental critique of the current property regime, calling for radical social and political change. In The Abuse of Property, Daniel Loick offers a multifaceted philosophical critique of the concept of property, broadly understood. He argues that property should not be the dominant framework in which human beings regulate the use of things, that property is not the same as use. Property rights, in his view, are not conditions of freedom or justice, but deficient, dysfunctional, and harmful ways of interacting with other people and the natural environment. He dissects not only the classic justifications of property (from John Locke's justification of property as a natural right based on individual freedom to Hegel's justification of property as a form of mutual recognition) but also the classic critiques of property, from Proudhon and Marx up to Adorno and Agamben. Through an innovative critical approach to legal studies, Loick demonstrates how the concept of property, historically applied to things and people and still a linchpin of our distorted relation with the world, forms a direct line from the Occupy movement to Black Lives Matter and beyond.
Football Fandom and Migration
This book studies how transnationalisation, Europeanisation and migration processes intersect with football fandom, through an analysis of the transnational narratives and practices of Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray football fans in Vienna, Austria. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in Austria, Turkey and Germany, the author analyses the ways in which narratives about football fandom are often linked to migrant experiences, including practices of (self‐)culturalization in the diasporic context in Austria. The book shows how constructed ethnicities and also masculinities and femininities meet in football fan performances and in the construction of what makes a “proper” football fan. Turkish football fandom is a field where powerful prejudices and stereotypes amalgamate and interact. This study enables the reader to look into migration processes and discussions about related topics from a different angle: the love of a football club. Football Fandom and Migration will be of interest to students and scholars across a range of disciplines, including anthropology, sociology, European studies, political sciences, gender studies, leisure studies, sport sociology and history.

Belonging in Unhomely Homelands

Using their rich biographical narratives and intersectional analysis, this book provides insight into the nuanced ways individuals navigate their sense of place, sense of loss and belonging during times of upheaval and the rise of nationalism, with connections to territoriality of homeland as central to identity. Wie bestimmen materielle Ansprüche und melancholisch verinnerlichte Hoffnungen Wohnweisen und sozialräumliche Orientierungen? Auf welche Art und Weise wird über das Wohnen sozialer und physischer Raum eingenommen? Welche Vorstellungen eines guten Lebens werden realisiert? Die Analyse der Wohn- und Einrichtungsweisen russischsprachiger migrantischer Mittelschichten beleuchtet praktische und mentale Aneignung und Manipulation materieller Kulturen der Ankunftsgesellschaft und untersucht die Ausschlüsse und Rassismuserfahrungen, die diese oft als vorbildlich und unauffällig wahrgenommenen Menschen in der deutschen Migrationsgesellschaft erfahren. Ausgehend vom Wohnen werden bestehende Geschichten der Migration russischsprachiger Jüd*innen, Russlanddeutscher und Bildungsmigrant*innen überprüft und andere Erzählungen entworfen.
Das neue Zuhause
Dass Migration die Ausnahme sei, Sesshaftigkeit hingegen der Normalfall, ist ein weitverbreiteter Irrtum. Gegen diese Auffassung von Gesellschaft richtet sich der vorliegende Band. Die Beitragenden nehmen die Wohnverhältnisse, den Haushalt sowie den Sachbesitz von Migranten in den Blick und damit die Diversität gesellschaftlicher und kultureller Bezüge. Vielfältige Alltagspraktiken und unterschiedliche Bewertungen des Wohnens machen deutlich, dass pauschale Kategorien oder statische Schemata für eine angemessene Beschreibung der postmigrantischen Gesellschaft nicht geeignet sind.
Diversity in Transcultural and International Communication

Migration in Jewish Imagination and Experience
Migration has been a central, defining element of Jewish life since Antiquity. Over the centuries, it has become the subject of a rich and diverse mythology that re-imagines and re-interprets the movements of Jews across time and space in the past – whether distant or recent – according to the needs and concerns of the present. This volume considers the mythology of Jewish migration as a phenomenon in its own right, that reflects themes, concerns, and historical “realities” common to many Jewish communities. Employing methodologies from the fields of history, literary and cultural studies, and sociology, the essays interrogate mythologized narratives of Jewish migration drawn from a range of settings, exploring the diverse, yet often surprisingly similar “realities” that they represent.
