In this engaging account, the first president of Brandeis tells how many formidable obstacles to launching a new university without initial capital endowment or any hope of alumni support for at least a generation were overcome; how academic goals were drafted, distinguished faculty recruited, and chairs endowed; and how a dilapidated campus was expended into a well-organized plant of some 90 buildings. In this revision of the 1976 edition, Abram L. Sachar expands the scope of his commentary and imbues it with a critical depth and objectivity that comes from 20 additional years of active involvement in the service of the university.
American Sailor Kurt Reid is a hothead and a hard case—a man who hits first and asks questions later. As scrappy and rough around the edges as Jimmy Cagney, it’s no wonder that when the ship’s captain turns up dead, it’s Reid who takes the rap. Falsely accused and under the gun, Reid jumps ship and vanishes into Shanghai —only to get caught in a web of intrigue, betrayal, and murder. In a world where nothing is what it seems and everything is for sale, he’s soon out of his depth, drawn into a spy game in which the winner takes all . . . and the loser takes a knife to the back. Will Reid live up to his reputation as the Spy Killer? He’ll have to learn the rules fast, because wit...

During the past decade, significant progress in molecular and cellular te- niques has greatly advanced our understanding of the wound healing p- cess. Many of these new techniques have been utilized in the context of more classic models of wound healing. The combination of new and classic approaches has allowed scientists to make exciting discoveries in the field of tissue repair, resulting in an explosion of information about the healing p- cess. Importantly, these new findings have great relevance beyond wound healing itself. The injury repair process cuts across many disciplines, exte- ing to such broad fields as cancer, inflammation, and atherosclerosis. The relevance of the field to the...
Super networks, say Nagurney (management, U. of Massachusetts- Amherst) and Dong (business, State U. of New York-Oswego), are above and beyond existing networks; rather than being made of nodes, links, and flow, are conceptual in scope, graphical in perspective, and predictive when accompanied by a suitable theory. They set out a unifying framework for using such supernetworks by which consumers, producers, intermediaries, and other economic agents can make decisions in the context of a networked economy. In order to identify equilibrium flows and prices, they model the behavior of individual agents and their interactions with the complex network systems. Dual Process Theory 2.0 provides a comprehensive overview of the new directions in which dual process research is heading. Human thinking is often characterized as an interplay between intuition and deliberation and this two-headed, dual process view of human thinking has been very influential in the cognitive sciences and popular media. However, despite the popularity of the dual process framework it faces multiple challenges. Recent advances indicate that there is a strong need to re-think some of the fundamental assumptions of the original dual process model. With chapters written by leading scholars who have been actively involved in the development of an upgraded ‘Dual Process Theory 2.0’, this edited volume presents an accessible overview of the latest empirical findings and theoretical ideas.. With cutting edge insights on the interaction between intuition and deliberation, Dual Process Theory 2.0 should be of interest to psychologists, philosophers, and economists who are using dual process models.
