Who's #1?

There’s nothing quite as controversial in American sports as college football’s national championship, making it common fodder for talk around the water cooler as well as loftier debates among professional journalists in the sports pages. Walsh takes a comprehensive view of over a century of controversy, breaking teams down into one of three categories: perennial powers, contenders, and former greats. He then reviews the ten most controversial championships, suggests candidates for the best overall football program, and concludes with some thoughts on the future of the BCS. A comprehensive appendix lists national champions since 1869; AP and USA Today/UPI final polls; final BCS standings; first-team All-Americans; and College Football Hall of Fame inductees.

Slingin' Sam

Dan Jenkins calls him “the greatest quarterback who ever lived, college or pro.” Slingin’ Sammy Baugh, who played for TCU and the Washington Redskins, single-handedly revolutionized the game of football. While the pros still wore leather helmets and played the game more like rugby, Baugh’s ability to throw the ball with rifle-like accuracy made the forward pass a strategic weapon, not a desperation heave. Like Babe Ruth, who changed the very perception of how baseball is played, Slingin’ Sam transformed the notion of offense in football and how much yardage can be gained through the air. As the first modern quarterback, Baugh led the Redskins to five title games and two NFL champio...

Rather than investigate methods for recognizing patterns, works toward formalizing the very concept of a pattern in terms of a mathematical framework. Based on her 1991 lectures at Johns Hopkins, Granander presents a catalogue of patterns requiring little mathematical knowledge; reasons about what the patterns have in common, which requires a junior or senior level of mathematics; and applies the pattern theoretic ideas to the construction of algorithms and computer programs to handle and analyze patterns, which requires computer experience. Storms and Grace

Sometimes its hard to know why you do things, why you make such bad, unexplainable choices so begins the remarkable story of faith, testing, lost and redemption. It is a story not so much about a person, but a God who loves and preserves those who trust him. Storms and Grace carries you on a journey with a young man who found hope and meaning to life when he found God, but faced with the terrible inner storms lost sight of the Voice: that would not let him go. From Viet Nam to the murderous streets of Detroit you grip the pages breathlessly waiting for the next storm to end. How does a conscientious objector become a heavily armed and unpredictably dangerous time bomb more afraid of himself then any man living? Storms and Grace reaffirms humanities deep longing and hope that divine intervention still lives and is very personal.

This is the first book to document the history of cigarette advertising on college and university campuses. From the 1920s to the 1960s, such advertisers had a strong financial grip on student media and thus a degree of financial power over colleges and universities across the nation. The tobacco industry's strength was so great many doubted whether student newspapers and other campus media could survive without them. When the Tobacco Institute, the organization that governed the industry, decided to pull their advertising in June of 1963 nearly 2,000 student publications needed to recover up to 50 percent of their newly lost revenue. Although student newspapers are the main focus of this book, tobacco's presence on campus permeated more than just the student paper. Cigarette brands were promoted at football games, on campus radio and through campus representatives, and promotional items were placed on campus in locations such as university stores and the student union.
