Mickey Owen's untimely passed ball in the 1941 World Series. Don Larsen's perfect game. Carlton Fisk cheering for his blast to stay fair as it sailed over Boston's Green Monster. These moments and many like them are forever etched in the minds of baseball fans. Though other sports have produced their shares of postseason memories, it is only in baseball that they are seemly forever remembered. The thrill of Willie Mays' overhead catch against the Cleveland Indians or the agony of Bill Buckner's error that denied Boston its first world championship in decades are as fresh today as they were when they occurred. The stories of 26 dramatic postseason moments in the national pastime are told here. The background of the players, the impact of the play on the postseason, and the lasting effect it had on those involved are fully covered.

Alfonso Ramon Lopez spent 36 years in the big leagues as a catcher and manager. He had a .261 lifetime batting average, compiled 1,547 hits and caught a then-record 1,918 games in a 19-year playing career. The teams he managed--the Cleveland Indians and the Chicago White Sox--won two pennants and finished runner-up 10 times in 17 seasons. He was the only manager to interrupt the Yankees' 15 year pennant dynasty from 1949, piloting the Indians in 1954 with an A.L. record 111 wins and guiding the White Sox in 1959. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1977. Al Lopez of Tampa opened up baseball to individuals of Spanish, Cuban and Italian ancestry at a time when social barriers had just begun to recede. He symbolized for many Latins the path to success. This book is his first-ever biography. It is based, first, on the recollections of the man himself, and former players, family, and fans, and also on newspaper and periodical accounts, and archival resources.

Iconic ballplayer Rocky Colavito captivated fans during the 1950s and 1960s with his movie-star looks, boyish enthusiasm, powerful bat and cannon-like arm. This biography of "the Rock"--the first in more than half a century--recounts his origins in an Italian immigrant family, his close friendships with Herb Score and Roger Maris, and his rise through the minors to become one of the Cleveland Indians' most beloved players--who retired with the third most home runs by a right-handed AL batter. The author also examines the controversial trade that sent Colavito, the AL's 1959 home run champion, to the Detroit Tigers for batting champion Harvey Kuenn. Colavito's departure was a crushing blow to Indians fans and the team's subsequent 34-year slump was dubbed "the Curse of Colavito."

It is also for people who grew up in small towns and in the country, and who live in small communities, even in big towns and cities. The stories were orginally for my grandchildren, and then some of them were published in Stone County Enterprise, the weekly newspaper in Wiggens, Mississippi. ... This little book is also about life in the 1950s which was a magcal time for me, a kid growing up in the village of Perkinston, Mississippi."-- Author's Preface.
