Respect

"A remarkably complex portrait of Aretha Franklin's music and her tumultuous life." --Rolling Stone Aretha Franklin began life as the golden daughter of a progressive and promiscuous Baptist preacher. Raised without her mother, she was a gospel prodigy who gave birth to two sons in her teens and left them--and her native Detroit--for New York, where she struggled to find her true voice. After fame and fortune finally came via "Respect," and a rapid-fire string of hits, she has evolved ever since, amidst personal tragedy, surprise Grammy performances, and career reinventions. Aretha's hold on her crown is tenacious, and in RESPECT David Ritz gives us the decisive and definitive study of one of the greatest American talents of the twentieth century.

Montgomery Bus Boycott

In 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the Brown v. Board of Education case that segregation in public schools was unconstitutional, but in Montgomery, Alabama, segregation remained the way of life, especially on the buses. Not only were black citizens forced to sit in the back of the bus, they were frequently the victims of abuse and humiliation. When Rosa Parks, a modest black woman, was arrested for refusing to give up her seat, civil rights activists decided to use her case as a rallying point, and quickly urged all black citizens of Montgomery to boycott the buses. More than 90 percent complied. Soon, a charismatic, young preacher named Martin Luther King Jr. was selected to lead the strike, and the Civil Rights movement began. But the white authorities in Montgomery held desperately to power, battling the strikers in the courts and on the streets. Inspired by King and determined to demand equality, the black people of Montgomery refused to back down, or be intimidated by anything thrown at them, whether it was fines, beatings, arrests, or bombs. Sit-ins and Freedom Rides

Though people such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks are often credited with the success of the civil rights movement, thousands of others staged their own grassroots campaigns to help and segregation in America. In 1960, four students of North Carolina A & T university staged as sit-in at a whites-only lunch counter. Despite fears of arrest, beatings, or worse, the four spent the day at the counter, quietly and politely. The next day, they came back, with more protesters. Soon, they inspired sit-in movements throughout the South. At the same time, a group of activists decided to challenge segregation on interstate buses by going on a Freedom Ride, a bus ride throughout the South to a number of segregated areas. Through they were frequently greeted by violent assault and their buses were burned and destroyed, they carried on. Their persistence and commitment to nonviolence grabbed headlines, as well as the attention of President John F. Kennedy and his attorney general brother Robert. Their courage helped strike of powerful blow against racism throughout America. Book jacket.
