Understanding and utilizing the interactions between environment and nanoscale materials is a new way to resolve the increasingly challenging environmental issues we are facing and will continue to face. Environanotechnology is the nanoscale technology developed for monitoring the quality of the environment, treating water and wastewater, as well as controlling air pollutants. Therefore, the applications of nanotechnology in environmental engineering have been of great interest to many fields and consequently a fair amount of research on the use of nanoscale materials for dealing with environmental issues has been conducted. The aim of this book is to report on the results recently achieved i...
Sustainable development is a globally recognized mandate and it includes green or environment-friendly manufacturing practices. Such practices orchestrate with the self-healing and self-replenishing capability of natural ecosystems. Green manufacturing encompasses synthesis, processing, fabrication, and process optimization, but also testing, performance evaluation and reliability. The book shall serve as a comprehensive and authoritative resource on sustainable manufacturing of ceramics, metals and their composites. It is designed to capture the diversity and unity of methods and approaches to materials processing, manufacturing, testing and evaluation across disciplines and length scales. ...
The European Microanalysis Society held its Fourth Workshop in Saint Malo in May 1995. This volume includes the revised presentations, 10 tutorial chapters and 50 brief articles, from leading experts in electron probe microanalysis, secondary mass spectroscopy, analytical electron microscopy, and related fields.
Nanotechnology has the potential to play an important role in increasing the sustainability of a wide range of industrial sectors. Nanomaterials could contribute to more sustainable manufacturing through cleaner, less wasteful production processes and can substitute conventional materials, leading to savings in raw materials and energy. Nanotechnology for Sustainable Manufacturing discusses recent progress in the areas of energy and materials efficiency related to resource savings and conservation of raw materials, which are drivers for the application of nanotechnology in the industrial setting. Written by leading experts from Europe, North America, Asia, and Australia, the book provides an...
Nanomaterials have the potential to contribute to more sustainable manufacturing through cleaner, less wasteful production processes and can substitute conventional materials, leading to savings in raw materials and energy. This book provides an innovative perspective by establishing connections between the subject areas associated with nanotechnology and by bridging academic and industrial research. It also covers methods for assessing the sustainability of nanotechnology-based products and processes using life-cycle analysis, taking into account material and energy consumption during manufacture, use, and final disposal and/or recycling.
The Advanced Study Institute provided an opportunity for researchers in universities, industry and National and International Laboratories, from the disciplines ofmaterials science, physics, chemistry and engineering to meet together in an assessment of the impact of electron and scanning probe microscopy on advanced material research. Since these researchers have traditionally relied upon different approaches, due to their different scientific background, to advanced materials problem solving, presentations and discussion within the Institute sessions were initially devoted to developing a set ofmutually understood basic concepts, inherently related to different techniques ofcharacterizatio...
The CRC Concise Encyclopedia of Nanotechnology sets the standard against which all other references of this nature are measured. As such, it is a major resource for both skilled professionals and novices to nanotechnology. The book examines the design, application, and utilization of devices, techniques, and technologies critical to research at the
To date, many types of polymer-derived ceramic fibers have been developed all over the world. Of these, SiC fibers synthesized from polycarbosilane and its derivatives have achieved the highest heat-resistance along with their excellent mechanical properties. Using these type of SiC fibers for the ceramic matrix composite materials, both high-temperature strength and light weight have been achieved. Therefore, these fibers have attracted a great deal of attention in the field of next-generation aerospace engine, nuclear applications, and so on. Furthermore, several types of functional ceramic fibers with surface gradient structures have been developed using derivatives of polycarbosilane. This book summarizes the historical viewpoint of polymer-derived ceramic fibers, basic information (production process, fine structures, physical properties, and so forth) about them, and their applications. It also presents prospects of future inorganic fibers.
