Leukocyte Trafficking

Written by known specialists in the field, this is a comprehensive and timely overview of a central and expanding topic. Simultaneously an introduction and a description of the latest concepts, findings and methods, the handbook provides basic knowledge on technical issues required for those intending to research in the field. It covers the functional role of involved molecules and the cellular mechanisms, and addresses selected examples for their possible application in therapy -- bridging the gap between trafficking mechanisms and novel therapeutic strategies. In addition, it includes selection of proven and timesaving methods for studying cell trafficking in vitro and in vivo. The accompanying CD-ROM makes leukocyte migration videos available to a broad audience for the first time.

Behavioral Modeling and Simulation

Behavioral Modeling and Simulation

Today's military missions have shifted away from fighting nation states using conventional weapons toward combating insurgents and terrorist networks in a battlespace in which the attitudes and behaviors of civilian noncombatants may be the primary effects of military actions. To support these new missions, the military services are increasingly interested in using models of the behavior of humans, as individuals and in groups of various kinds and sizes. Behavioral Modeling and Simulation reviews relevant individual, organizational, and societal (IOS) modeling research programs, evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of the programs and their methodologies, determines which have the greatest potential for military use, and provides guidance for the design of a research program to effectively foster the development of IOS models useful to the military. This book will be of interest to model developers, operational military users of the models and their managers, and government personnel making funding decisions regarding model development.

Much has been said about managing herpesvirus infections since the discovery of acyclovir more than 15 years ago. This book aims to bring practical advice to the key clinician who is faced with managing these infections. It addresses questions like: there are antiviral treatments for many of these infections, but who should be getting these drugs and who should not? What are the advantages, if any, of the new drugs over the old ones? Which patients should be targeted for intervention? What is the clinical reality of antiviral resistance? Where do the up and coming vaccines fit into the picture? When should therapy be discontinued or reassessed? How are patients presenting other than chorioretinitis in AIDS or pneumonitis in transplantation? The contributing clinician scientists deal with these questions and many more. Derived from the conference submissions for the 2012 AHFE conference, this volume focuses on types of human-modeled technology. Topics include digital human model types, 3D scanning, human patterns in terms of physiological and psychological interactions, including human algorithms that aim to model human forms, interactions, and dynamics. It also covers validation of digital human modes and the exploration of future of human models. This book is for Human factors and ergonomics engineers, cognitive engineers, human computer interaction engineers, human performance modeling engineers, and students in related fields.
