A History of the Modern British Isles, 1603-1707

This is a survey of a seminal and intensely controversial period in British history, from the union of the Crowns of England and Scotland in 1603 to the union of the Kingdoms in 1707. The book explores the intersecting histories of the Stuart monarchies and considers how events in each nation were shaped by being part of a multiple kingdom as well as by their own internal dynamics. Throughout, special attention is given to the personalities and political style of successive rulers. Their role in precipitating two revolutions is examined against the background of longer term constitutional, religious and social themes. In particular, the parallels between James I and Charles II, and between Charles I and James II, are clearly drawn out.

With Willful Intent

'With Willful Intent: A Theology of Sin' is a full orbed examination of sin and the human Fall. Its intention is to provide the reader/student with both the materials and methodology to formulate his or her own biblically based theology of sin. The book is arranged in four sequential sections to guide the reader through the process of theological development. The first section, "A Historical Theology of Sin," furnishes a detailed outline of Christian thought on sin from the time of the early church to the present day. These chapters will help the reader to understand why so many differing views of sin and the Fall exist. The second section, "A Biblical Theology of Sin," is the keystone of th...

The Stuart Parliaments, 1603-1689

The seventeenth century was one of the most crucial periods in the history of the English Parliament. David Smith offers us the first synthesis of the large body of research on the subject, transcending both the 'Whig' and 'revisionist' positions by integrating parliamentary history into the wider processes of government and the continuing relationship between successive rulers and their subjects.

The book is divided into three basic sections: A Historical Theology of the Church surveys the history of theology of the church, beginning with the early church, the formative years for all Christian theology; A Biblical Theology of the Church examines the Old Testament, Gospels, and apostolic sense of the people of God; A Systematic Theology of the Church seeks to both systematize the biblical theology and synthesize it with contemporary thought. Finally, A Practical Theology of the Church concludes the work relating the book's lessons to the contemporary church climate.

Making Monsters

A leading scholar explores what it means to dehumanize othersÑand how and why we do it. ÒI wouldnÕt have accepted that they were human beings. You would see an infant whoÕs just learning to smile, and it smiles at you, but you still kill it.Ó So a Hutu man explained to an incredulous researcher, when asked to recall how he felt slaughtering Tutsis in Rwanda in 1994. Such statements are shocking, yet we recognize them; we hear their echoes in accounts of genocides, massacres, and pogroms throughout history. How do some people come to believe that their enemies are monsters, and therefore easy to kill? In Making Monsters David Livingstone Smith offers a poignant meditation on the philosop...

Good Guys

The key to advancing gender equality? Men. Women are at a disadvantage. At home, they often face an unequal division of household chores and childcare, and in the workplace, they deal with lower pay, lack of credit for their contributions, roadblocks to promotion, sexual harassment, and more. And while organizations are looking to address these issues, too many gender-inclusion initiatives focus on how women themselves should respond, reinforcing the perception that these are "women's issues" and that men—often the most influential stakeholders in an organization—don't need to be involved. Gender-in-the-workplace experts David G. Smith and W. Brad Johnson counter this perception. In this...
