Hormone Resistance and Hypersensitivity

Over recent years, impressive advances in genetic/epigenetic technology have greatly improved the understanding of the pathogenesis of pediatric endocrine diseases due to hormone resistance and hypersensitivity. This book presents reviews of thyroid hormone and thyroid hormone receptor resistance, and genetics and epigenetics of parathyroid hormone resistance. Abnormalities of the pituitary-gonadal axis affecting puberty as well as androgen receptor are covered. Novel insights into the diseases affecting ACTH, glucocorticoid and aldosterone receptors are discussed. Further chapters address new aspects of the physiology of the GH and IGF-1 axis as well as the diseases related to GH-IGF-1 receptor and post-receptor signaling defects. A key chapter on metabolic insights into insulin resistance is also included. Covering clinical and genetic aspects of hormone resistance and hypersensitivity, this book will be a useful tool in the hands of scientists, physicians and other healthcare professionals who wish to be up to date with novel research findings in this area.

Short Stature: Beyond Growth Hormone

Short stature refers to a height less than two standard deviations below the mean for a given age and gender. The effective investigation of short stature pathology in children combines clinical assessment, to view symptoms and bodily dysfunctions; endocrine assessment, to determine hormone levels and sensitivity; and increasingly advanced genetic analysis. Many children of short stature do not have an identified underlying pathology, thus assigned as having idiopathic short stature (ISS). Consequently, the ISS population can be subdivided into those with ‘normal variants’ of growth, termed familial short stature (FSS) and non-familial short stature (NFSS), including constitutional delay of growth and puberty (CDGP). These categories can then separate from that of children with ISS who show a different etiology.

Cartilage and Bone Development and Its Disorders

Covering recent advances in basic and clinical research In systemic childhood diseases, including cancer, gastrointestinal, pulmonary and cardiac disorders, childhood growth is severely impaired. In addition, almost 400 known genetic diseases inhibit the ability of the growth plate to form new bone, leaving affected children with growth failure and bony deformities which can severely impact their quality of life and may lead to morbidity and early mortality. This book provides a comprehensive review of bone and cartilage development, growth and disease. Focusing on novel treatment strategies, regulatory signals and molecular mechanisms are discussed in relation to the diseases affecting them...
