The first edition of Leg Ulcers by David Negus was published in 1991. Since then, developments in the management of venous disorders and, in particular, of venous ulceration, have continued apace. Prominent among these has been the development of duplex ultrasound scanning, which now enables the diagnosis and treatment of venous ulceration to be undertaken with a sound knowledge of the underlying anatomy. Treatment options now include PIN stripping of the long saphenous vein, endoscopic perforating vein interruption and ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy. All of these developments, and more, are covered in this comprehensive guide to the management of this unpleasant and often socially una...

The management of diseases of the venous system has evolved rapidly over the last forty years. Much of this development occured since the creation of the Union Internationale de Phlebologie (UIP) in 1959 which has helped to bring together those involved in the management of venous diseases. The Proceedings of the XII World Congress of the UIP will reflect the diversity of disciplines involved (such as phlebologists, dermatologists, surgeons, physiologists and radiologists) as well as new methods of investigation, prevention and the latest research on the topic.

The Police, Public Order, and Civil Liberties

What role should the police have in an industrial dispute? How were they led into a partisan role in assisting the defeat of the 1984-5 miners' strike? Widespread concern over police road-blocks, allegations of police and picket violence, and the huge numbers of police used to maintain order and access to work led the National Council for Civil Liberties to set up an inquiry into the policing. The Inquiry Panel produced an interim report – but the NCCL disowned it, because of its acknowledgement of the rights of working miners as well as striking ones. The members of the Panel – who included former Chief Constable John Alderson and NCCL General Secretary Larry Gostin – then resigned, b...

Children Enslaved

Children Enslaved, first published in 1988, reveals the full extent of child slavery throughout the world. By personal investigation in regions where slavery still prevails, and with extensive research into documentation provided by international organizations defending children’s rights, the author gives the most comprehensive assessment available of contemporary child slavery. He describes both persisting traditional forms of child exploitation and modern abuses and deprivations of freedom, including child migrant workers and those involved in the manufacturing industry, and the desolate world of child pornography and sexual exploitation.

Routledge Library Editions: Political Protest

This 26-volume set is a wide-ranging, time- and subject-spanning examination of the phenomenon of political protest. What drives people to take to the streets, and how do their governments respond? These questions and many more are analysed in areas as varied as sixteenth-century German peasant uprisings, revolutionary Russians at the Paris Commune, women protesting nuclear weapons at Greenham Common, and the role Christianity played in protests across the ages. An impressive reference resource, this set also looks at the policing of protests and official responses to them.

The Law's Conscience

  • Categories: Law

The Law's Conscience is a history of equity in Anglo-American juris-prudence from the inception of the chancellor's court in medieval England to the recent civil rights and affirmative action decisions of the United States Supreme Court. Peter Hoffer argues that equity embodies a way of looking at law, including constitutions, based on ideas of mutual fairness, public trusteeship, and equal protection. His central theme is the tension between the ideal of equity and the actual availability of equitable remedies. Hoffer examines this tension in the trusteeship constitutionalism of John Locke and Thomas Jefferson; the incorporation of equity in the first American constitutions; the antebellum controversy over slavery; the fortunes of the Freedmen's Bureau after the Civil War; the emergence of the doctrine of "Balance of Equity" in twentieth-century public-interest law; and the desegregation and reverse discrimination cases of the past thirty-five years. Brown v. Board of Education (1954) was the most important equity suit in American history, and Hoffer begins and ends his book with a new interpretation of its lessons.

Song Translation: Lyrics in Contexts

Song Translation: Lyrics in Contexts grew out of a project dedicated to the translation of song lyrics. The book aligns itself with the tradition of descriptive translation studies. Its authors, scholars from Finland, Great Britain, Greece, Italy, Norway and Sweden, all deal with the translation of song lyrics in a great variety of different contexts, including music and performance settings, (inter)cultural perspectives, and historical backgrounds. On the one hand, the analyses demonstrate the breadth and diversity of the concept of translation itself, on the other they show how different contexts set up conditions that shape translational practices and products in different ways. The book is intended for translation studies scholars as well as for musicologists, students of language and/or music and practicing translators; in short, anybody interested in this creative and fascinating field of translational practice.
