Global Project Finance, Human Rights and Sustainable Development

  • Categories: Law

Many infrastructure projects around the world are funded through the project finance method, which combines private financing with public sector backing from multilateral finance institutions such as the World Bank. This examination of the theoretical and practical implications of such funding begins with a discussion of the relationship between the financial structuring of these projects and finance, policy and legal disciplines, especially in the form of investment law, human rights and environmental law. A number of case studies are then examined to provide practical insights into the application (or otherwise) of human rights and sustainable development objectives within such projects. While these theoretical perspectives do not conclude that the project finance method detracts from the application or implementation of human rights and sustainable development objectives, they do highlight the potential for the prioritisation of investment returns at the expense of human rights and environmental protection standards.

The Grass Is Not Always Greener

David Ong is a sports journalist employed by a small, provincial newspaper. Now in his thirties, he feels that his career should be moving on. He persuades his editor to switch his role to that of general journalism in an attempt to move up the professional ladder. Early in his new doctrine, circumstances force him into hastily buying a small, tatty van. It is a vehicle that was previously owned by criminals and was sent to the auction house in error. Dave discovers cocaine hidden in empty seed packets behind the lining in the van. Along with his brother Dick, who is a detective inspector, the duo attempt to trace its trail. Starting at a garden centre, it leads Dave to a UK port where, attempting to hide from the villains hot on his trail, he gets inadvertently transported to Morocco by boat. The situation in Morocco escalates into something far more sinister and world-threatening than the initial drug empire that he was investigating. His brother joins him and later on, MI6 are also involved. A tactical game of 'cat and mouse' develops as a battle between good and evil ensues. The story has many unexpected twists and turns and terminates with a life defining assessment.
