Augmented Reality (AR) is an innovative technology to improve product evaluation in e-commerce. It enables online consumers to project virtual product models into their surrounding real-world environment in real time using their mobile devices (e.g., projecting a virtual model of a sofa into its dedicated place in the living room via smartphone). AR can thus facilitate a more realistic online product evaluation and potentially increase sales. However, AR's effectiveness may depend on different usage contexts and product characteristics. The main objective of this cumulative dissertation is to provide a better understanding of AR in e-commerce and resulting consumer behavior. To this end, thi...
John E. Hill’s Adam Smith’s Sociability and the American Dream seeks to correct the three misunderstandings that have hindered the pursuit of the American dream and contributed to excessive individualism at the expense of community. Market fundamentalists ignore the importance of Adam Smith’s impartial spectator for capitalism; his ideal economy was not a free market but a sociable and fair one. A fair market would promote individuality within vibrant communities and would be consistent with Smith’s “justice, liberty, and equality” formula. Such a sociable market would also be more productive. Second, many Christians misunderstand the love your neighbor commandment, excluding the outsider, so explicit in the parable. Failure to follow John Adams’s warnings that aristocrats are dangerous in a republic. Free market advocates devalue the immense contributions communities make to the economy. Greater sociability would also facilitate the pursuit of happiness. It would not be necessary to reinvent the wheel to move to this more ideal society. Cooperative organizations already exist in the United States and in other countries as models for reform.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a scan that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of the inside of the body. This book is a comprehensive guide to the diagnosis and management of neurological infectious diseases using MRI. Divided into four sections, the text begins with an introduction to tropical diseases of the central nervous system, and their epidemiology. The second section provides in depth coverage of the technique of MRI, from the basic principles, to clinical application and more advanced features. The following sections describe use of the technique for both infectious diseases, including tuberculosis, HIV and parasitic diseases; and noninfectious conditions, such as stroke, poisoning and epilepsy. Each chapter features numerous MRI and pathological images and extensive references. Key points Comprehensive guide to diagnosis and management of neurological infectious diseases in tropics using MRI In depth coverage of the technique, from basics to more advanced aspects Covers MRI for both infectious and noninfectious conditions Includes nearly 300 MRI and pathological images
The spread and use of screen-based devices have been steeply increasing with new types of screen-based devices such as tablets, e-readers, and screen-based wearable devices (e.g., Smartchwatches) being introduced to the market. Moreover, traditional screen-based devices such as the television (TV) have been merged with Internet technologies. An industry particularly affected by this increasing use of screen-based devices is the media industry. For instance, consumers frequently use multiple screen-based devices in parallel, switching back and forth between devices. The key objective of this cumulative dissertation is to provide insights into the implications of multi-screen behavior for the ...
Social contagion is ubiquitous in the day-to-day lives of consumers. Whether at home with their families, at work with colleagues, spending leisure time with friends, or even when only surrounded by strangers, consumers are always exposed to and influenced by the actions of others. The wide-scale use of digital communication technologies and online social networks has further exacerbated this influence by enabling more varied and intense ways to connect and interact. In the three essays constituting this dissertation, we ask how marketers and product designers can purposefully use social product design features to achieve superior managerial outcomes by harnessing social contagion. The first...
The use of digital technologies have given rise to new forms of customer-firm interactions (e.g., the use of digital assistants in customer service). The shift towards digitization of customer-firm interactions enables a wide and easily scalable new set of offerings to consumers. This dissertation examines the extent to which customers benefit from these technological advances by taking on a behavioral economics perspective. The main focus of the dissertation lies on two aspects which are highly relevant for firms: (i) customer satisfaction, and (ii) the q...
