Never Trust a Dead Man

This winner of the Edgar Award for Best Young Adult Mystery is “an entertaining blend of fantasy, whodunit, and comedy” (School Library Journal). When Selwyn, a farmer, is accused of murdering his rival, Farold, he is sealed in the village burial cave with Farold’s moldering corpse to await starvation—or worse. Worse comes along quickly in the form of a witch who raises Farold from the dead. Selwyn thought he disliked Farold when he was alive, but that was nothing compared to working by the dead man’s side as they search for the real killer. “Murder, magic, salacious secrets, and sparkling wit immediately pull the reader into this engrossing medieval whodunit . . . universally appealing and difficult to put down.” —Kirkus Reviews “A tongue-in-cheek medieval farce and a supernatural mystery.” —Library Journal “An entertaining book that will attract both fantasy and mystery readers.” —Booklist

For David Smith (19061965), widely considered one of the foremost American abstract expressionist sculptors of the 20th century, there was no conceptual boundary between mediums. Focusing on works from the late 1950s until the artists untimely death in 1965, this oversized but trim exhibition catalog charts the development of 21 stunning works couched among historic images culled from the artists archive. The physical qualities of Smiths welded-steel sculptures transmit a strong industrial presence but part of their impact and power derives from their gestural and tactile surfaces that give painting and drawing and sculpture the same visual impact and spatial weight. Smith paved the way for such artists as John Chamberlain, Mark di Suvero and Richard Serra by moving the site of sculptures construction from the 19th-century confines of the artists atelier and fine-art foundry into the expansive, industrial context of the 20th century. Essay by Menil Collection curator Michelle White.

The Dark Eagles

The Dark Eagles

It had long been held in ancient legend that the majestic black raptors on Fundautum served as sentinels of freedom. With hundreds of years of peace in Kief’s homeland, their sightings have been rare. But when his dead grandfather leaves him a mysterious white stone and his nation is attacked by the Gars, the dark eagles begin to appear once more. As Kief watches his own town leaders betray his father and craft an alliance with the enemy, he’s determined to make them pay. He forms a secret band called the “Dark Eagles” to fight back. Unsuspected by the Gars, Kief’s little gang weaves together the perfect plot. However, Kief’s vengeful impulse for his father’s betrayal endangers all their lives and threatens the plan’s success. When he discovers that what the Gars are seeking in his mountain home will give them power over the entire world, he is forced to make a decision that could cost him his life. He comes to see that he is fighting for something greater than mere revenge. In the fight for his homeland Kief realizes he has more of a connection to the small white stone and the dark eagles’ charge to defend freedom than he ever imagined.

Digital Transmission Systems

In the development of telecommunication networks throughout the world, digital transmission has now replaced analog transmission as the predominant choice for new transmission facilities. This trend began in the early 1960s when the American Telephone and Telegraph Company first introduced pulse code modulation as a means of increasing capacity in their cable plant. Since that time, digital transmission applications have grown dramatically, notably in the United States, Canada, Japan, and Western Europe. With the rapidity of digital transmission developments and imple mentation, however, there has been a surprising lack of textbooks written on the subject. This book grew out of my work, rese...

Parody and Festivity in Early Modern Art

  • Categories: Art

Dwelling on the interconnections between parody and festivity as forms of inversion, the essays in this volume delve into the nature and the meanings of festive laughter as depicted in early modern art. Chapters deal most often with Northern Renaissance and Baroque art; themes include grobianism and the grotesque, scatology, popular proverbs with ironic twists, and a wide range of comic reversals, many hinging on ideas of the world upside down.

Reliability, Maintainability and Risk: Practical Methods for Engineers, Eighth Edition, discusses tools and techniques for reliable and safe engineering, and for optimizing maintenance strategies. It emphasizes the importance of using reliability techniques to identify and eliminate potential failures early in the design cycle. The focus is on techniques known as RAMS (reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety-integrity). The book is organized into five parts. Part 1 on reliability parameters and costs traces the history of reliability and safety technology and presents a cost-effective approach to quality, reliability, and safety. Part 2 deals with the interpretation of failure...
