Davor Konjikušić offers an in-depth presentation and contextualization of the photographs created by Yugoslav partisans between 1941 and 1945. The book goes beyond an aesthetic depiction of the photographs; it also deals with the history of their use and function within one of the biggest anti-fascist movements in Europe during the Second World War. The photographs are used to trace the development of a movement that—while seemingly doomed to certain failure—nevertheless survived the most destructive war in human history. This book provides new answers to the question of photography’s role as a medium and its significance and use in social movements.
Civic and Uncivic Values
Discusses Serbia’s struggle for democratic values after the fall of the Milošević regime provoked by the NATO war, and after the trauma caused by the secession of Kosovo. Are the value systems of the post-Milošević era true stumbling blocks of a delayed transition of this country? Seventeen contributors from Norway, Serbia, Italy, Germany, Poland and some other European countries covered a broad range of topics in order to provide answers to this question. The subjects of their investigations were national myths and symbols, history textbooks, media, film, religion, inter-ethnic dialogue, transitional justice, political party agendas and other related themes. The authors of the essays represent different scholarly disciplines whose theoretical conceptions and frameworks are employed in order to analyze two alternative value systems in Serbia: liberal, cosmopolitan and civic on the one hand, and traditional, provincial, nationalist on the other.

The intense circulation of people, contents and goods that characterises the current process of globalisation has led to unprecedented cultural encounters, which can be perceived either as the source of conflicts or opportunities for dialogue. This volume adopts a multidisciplinary approach to address issues that emerge at the confluence of “identity” and “culture”; and in their articulation, with the involvement of distinct geographic factors, by means of analyses of the notions and discourses involving such concepts, and the examination of specific intersectional contexts. From the macro- to the micro-level, from the collective to the individual, and the real to the constructed, then to the imagined and back to the real; from ideology to utopia, isolation to integration, and from “belonging” to “possessing”, the book discusses the role of shared spatialities in the forging of commonalities, and the multiple aspects that influence the formation of identity and the legitimation of cultural practices, as well as introducing conceptual tools like “dialogue zones” and “homely landscapes”.

Democratisation Without Societal Participation?
This book explores the strategy of the European Union in the democratisation processes of Serbia and Croatia in the years 2000 - 2005. It argues that the EU intervention turned the democratization processes into Europeanisation processes, which featured the promotion of societal participation, the regional approach and the conditionality principle as their constitutive elements. In examining the EU's choice of actors targeted and analysing the issue areas promoted by its policy, the study explores the implementation of concepts of societal participation and challenges the proclamation of civil society promotion being an indispensable part of the EU's democratisation agenda for Serbia and Croatia.
