Sistemi di prefabbricazione in legno
Fino a qualche anno fa l’impiego del legno in architettura era considerato scelta di ripiego e di scarsa qualità. Lo si riteneva, infatti, materiale utile soltanto per strutture provvisorie o, nella migliore delle ipotesi, abitazioni di montagna. Oggi la situazione è radicalmente cambiata: fortificato dal progresso tecnologico e dalla conversione ecologica che sta gradualmente trasformando l’architettura, il legno sta conoscendo una nuova vita, diventando “innovativo” grazie allo sviluppo della produzione industriale che, tramite l’applicazione dell’informatica alle macchine utensili, consente la produzione, a costi contenuti, di pezzi unici da montare a secco. Il progetto architettonico, così, si è riappropriato della sua centralità, e anche grandi progettisti hanno iniziato a confrontarsi con il legno. Anche le aziende produttrici di prefabbricati hanno abbandonato le abitazioni standardizzate a favore di veri e propri sistemi ad alta flessibilità progettuale e costruttiva. Le rudimentali case in legno, che facevano parte dell’immaginario collettivo, si sono così trasformate in vere e proprie abitazioni moderne, innovative e alla moda. (Andrea Lupacchini)

Sapienza for International Development Cooperation

Post-industrial Robotics
This book highlights the concept of informed architecture as an alternative to performance-based approaches. Starting with an analysis of the state of art, the book defines an operative methodology in which performative parameters lead to the generation of the shape becoming the design’s input, rather than being mere quantitative parameters. It then uses case studies to investigate the methodology. Lastly, the book discusses a novel way of conceiving and using the manufacturing tool, which is the basis for the definition of informed architectures in relation to data usage and the optimization process.
Urban Planning as a Trading Zone
'Trading zone' is a concept introduced by Peter Galison in his social scientific research on how scientists representing different sub-cultures and paradigms have been able to coordinate their interaction locally. In this book, Italian and Finnish planning researchers extend the use of the concept to different contexts of urban planning and management, where there is a need for new ideas and tools in managing the interaction of different stakeholders. The trading zone concept is approached as a tool in organizing local platforms and support systems for planning participation, knowledge production, decision making and local conflict management. In relation to the former theses of communicative planning theory that stress the ideals of consensus, mutual understanding and universal reason, the 'trading zone approach', outlined in this book, offers a different perspective. It focuses on the potentiality to coordinate locally the interaction of different stakeholders without requiring the deeper sharing of understandings, values and motives between them. Galison’s commentary comes in the form of the book’s final chapter.
