Create and Be Recognized is the first survey of a compelling, always surprising art form -- outsider photography. Presented here is the work of seventeen largely self-taught artists who have used photography or photographic elements in their creations, including such luminaries as Adolf Wolfli, Howard Finster, and Henry Darger, as well as discoveries from little known, equally dramatic artists. As with most outsider art, the work here is fuelled by singular passions, marginalized mindsets, and extreme circumstances, falling outside mainstream picture-making. Employing collage (affixing photos or reproductions to a background), photocollage (photographs cut and pasted together to form a new whole), and tableaux (works based on manipulation and staging), the artists here present work that is, by turns, lyrical and frightening, and always fascinating. Published to coincide with a major touring exhibition of the same name originating at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Create and Be Recognized documents an emerging and important facet of contemporary photography.

Originally created to preserve a record of scientific samples, the black and white X-rays of fish at the Smithsonian Institution have emerged as astonishing works of art in their own right. ... The Theater of Insects

From the Publisher: Butterflies, beetles, dragonflies, and other colorful insects take center stage in this collection of Jo Whaley's dazzling photographs. Inspired by natural history dioramas of an earlier era of scientific discovery, Whaley stages her photographs to emphasize the wonder and gemlike exquisiteness of these creatures through color, texture, and lighting. These simple but captivating portraits encourage the reader to consider the connections between nature and artifice, beauty and decay. Essays by entomologist Linda Wiener, photography curator Deborah Klochko, and Whaley herself complete this volume, which will delight and inspire entomology enthusiasts and anyone fascinated by the stunning results of the intersection of art and science.

Founded by Ansel Adams, directed by Minor White, and staffed by such luminaries as Imogen Cunningham, Dorothea Lange, Lisette Model, and Edward Weston, the first fine-art photography department in the United States was created in 1946 at the California School of Fine Arts (now known as the San Francisco Art Institute). Under White's leadership and against a backdrop of revolutions in photography as an art form, this dynamic faculty developed the modern photography curriculum, bringing a new academic pedigree to the medium and establishing the future of photography education. The Moment of Seeing is much more than a history of the program and those who comprised it. Including White's never-before-published writings on the teaching of photography, it is also a rich gallery of iconic images by both renowned faculty members and the dedicated students they taught.-publisher description.

The Time Between

  • Categories: Art

Minor White, a co-founder of Aperture Magazine, was a force in the field of sequential photography for more than three decades and one of America's most influential writers and educators of the 20th century. The term 'visual literacy,' now commonly used throughout all sub-fields of arts criticism, was coined by him. The Time Between is an original exhibition and publication dedicated to his work and legacy. It marks the first major examination focusing on White's theory about sequential photography, namely that 'the time between photographs is filled by the beholder.'

Since 1995, Dutch photographer Hendrik Kerstens has been photographing his daughter, Paula. His photographs have since been collected by museums around the world. Hendrik Kerstens pictures Paula in relation to events in her own life as well as projecting onto her his fascination with the Dutch Master painters of the seventeenth century. Conceptually, Kerstens' photographs play with the dialogue between the mediums of painting and photography, with seriality, and time. His 'Paula Pictures' are reminiscent of Vermeer's painting. The austerity and clarity of the photographs, coupled with the serenity of the subject and the characteristic 'dutch' light all combine to create striking, beautiful and haunting works of art. However, Kerstens has never been interested in just imitating painting. As the series progressed, he became increasingly interested in the game of creating a conceptual and humorous dialog between past and present.

Beyondboundaries

Beyond Boundaries is a survey of the best of California photography over the past five years. The sixty-five artists represented here have been drawn from a pool of over 300 photographers, nominated by museum curators, gallery directors, art publishers and critics, specialists at small non-profit organizations and major metropolitan museums, working across the state. The only parameter was that the artist selected needed to be living in California at the time. Developed over a year of meeting with the artists involved, Beyond Boundaires is arranged as a loosely thematic collage which echoes the links between the artists.
