Dynamical bifurcation theory is concerned with the changes that occur in the global structure of dynamical systems as parameters are varied. This book makes recent research in bifurcation theory of dynamical systems accessible to researchers interested in this subject. In particular, the relevant results obtained by Chinese mathematicians are introduced as well as some of the works of the authors which may not be widely known. In The Poet Zheng Zhen (1806-1864) and the Rise of Chinese Modernity, J. D. Schmidt provides the first detailed study in a Western language of one of China's greatest poets and explores the nineteenth-century background to Chinese modernity, challenging the widely held view that this is largely of Western origin. The volume contains a study of Zheng's life and times, an examination of his thought and literary theory, and four chapters studying his highly original contributions to poetry on the human realm, nature verse, narrative poetry, and the poetry of ideas, including his writings on science and technology. This volume constitutes the proceedings of the International Conference on Dynamical Systems in Honor of Prof. Liao Shantao (1920-97). The Third World Academy of Sciences awarded the first ever mathematics prize in 1985 to Prof. Liao in recognition of his foundational work in differentiable dynamical systems and his work in periodic transformation of spheres. The conference was held in Beijing in August 1998. There were about 90 participants, and nearly 60 talks were delivered.The topics covered include differentiable dynamics, topological dynamics, hamiltonian dynamics, complex dynamics, ergodic and stochastic dynamics, and fractals theory. Dynamical systems is a field with many difficult problems, and techniques are being developed to deal with those problems. Translations of the Yi jing into western languages have been biased towards the yili ('meaning and pattern') tradition, whereas studies of the xiangshu ('image and number') tradition - which takes as its point of departure the imagery and numerology associated with divination and its hexagrams, trigrams, lines, and related charts and diagrams - has remained relatively unexplored. This major new reference work is organised as a Chinese-English encyclopedia, arranged alphabetically according to the pinyin romanisation, with Chinese characters appended. A character index as well as an English index is included. The entries are of two kinds: technical terms and various other concepts related to the 'image and number' tradition, and bio-bibliographical information on Chinese Yi jing scholars. Each entry in the former category has a brief explanation that includes references to the origins of the term, cross-references, and a reference to an entry giving a more comprehensive treatment of the subject.
