Ibn al-ʿArabī’s Kitāb Fuṣūṣ al-Ḥikam wa-Khuṣūṣ al-Kalim
Although the exemplar of the Fuṣūṣ al-ḥikam has mysteriously disappeared shortly after its composition, the earliest copy in al-Qūnawī’s hand has survived. Having been collated with the orginal, read in front of Ibn al-ʿArabī, and signed by him, it stands as the vetustissimus and optimus. This edition is established on its reading and is checked against ʿAfīfī’s classic. Besides a fully vocalized text, it provides an appended facsimile of the manuscript. The introductory section is the first comprehensive study that tracks the whole story of the manuscript and attempts to identify possible scattered traces of the lost original. It reviews attitudes towards the text, as well as a century of scholarly research on it, and illustrates key concepts of the Master’s doctrine to help contextualize the book contents.

This book pivots around the ideas of al-Ḥakīm al-Tirmidhī, the first Muslim theologian and mystic to write on the topic of wilāya. By looking at its structural roots in Arab and Islamic social organization, Aiyub Palmer has reframed the discussion about sainthood in early Islam to show how it relates more broadly to other forms of authority in Islam. This book not only looks anew at the influential ideas of al-Tirmidhī but also challenges current modes of thought around the nature of authority in Islamicate societies.

In Ways of Seeking, Emily Drumsta traces the influence of detective fiction on the twentieth-century Arabic novel. Theorizing a “poetics of investigation,” she shows how these novels, far from staging awe-inspiring feats of logical deduction, mock the truth-seeking practices on which modern exercises of colonial and national power are often premised. Their narratives return to the archives of Arabic folklore, Islamic piety, and mysticism to explore less coercive ways of knowing, seeing, and seeking. Drumsta argues that scholars of the Middle East neglect the literary at their peril, overlooking key critiques of colonialism from the intellectuals who shaped and responded through fiction to the transformations of modernity. This book ultimately tells a different story about the novel’s place in the constellation of Arab modernism, modeling an innovative method of open-ended inquiry based on the literary texts themselves.
