Intends to present the difficulties that researchers working with migrants in precarious situations have to contend with, and to contribute to the development of methodological and ethical discussions relevant to the topic of migration as an interdisciplinary field of research. Somalis have been leaving their country for the last fifteen years, fleeing civil war, difficult economic conditions, drought and famine, and now constitute one of the largest diasporas in the world. Organized in the framework of collaboration between UNHCR and different countries, this research focuses on the secondary movements of Somali refugees. It was carried out as a multi-sited project in the following countries: Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, the Netherlands, South Africa, Switzerland and Yemen. The report provides a detailed insight into the movements of Somali refugees that is, their trajectories, the different stages in their migra-tion history and their underlying motivations. It also gives a compara-tive overview of different protection regimes and practices.
This study describes the profile of the Somali population living in Switzerland, as well as highlights their migration histories and trajectories. The analysis is complemented by a detailed insight into the living conditions and asylum policies in Switzerland and other host countries along the route. The aim of this double-layer analysis (micro and meso levels) is to provide a detailed understanding of the motives that prompt Somali refugees to undertake secondary movements from a first country of asylum in the search of better conditions in another one. This study is part of a wide-ranging, multi-sited project focusing on the secondary movements of Somali refugees in eight countries in Africa, the Middle East and Europe.
Social changes in European societies place migration and cultural diversity on the European political agenda. The European initiative Migrant Friendly Hospitals (MFH) aims to identify, develop and evaluate models of effective interventions. It has the following objectives: To strengthen the role of hospitals in promoting the health of migrants and ethnic minorities in the European Union and to improve hospital services for these groups. This report reviews models of effective intervention in the medical literature and provides the background information needed to enable partner hospitals taking part in the MFH initiative to select and implement suitable interventions. The interventions reviewed in this study are grouped in four areas: Communication, Responsiveness Empowerment of migrant and minority patients and communities. With the departure of European Muslims to the “Islamic State” and a wave of terrorist attacks in Europe in recent years, the questions of why and how individuals radicalize to Jihadi extremism attracted keen interest. This thesis examines how individuals radicalize by applying a theoretical framework that primarily refers to social capital theory, the economics of religion, and social movement theory. A comparison of immigrant integration policies in seven federal countries in light of constitutional structures, ethno-cultural composition and political trends.
Es ist bekannt, dass sich prekäre Lebens- und Aufenthaltsbedingungen negativ auf die Gesundheit auswirken. Diese durch das BAG finanzierte Studie geht der Frage nach, wie MigrantInnen in prekären Aufenthaltssituationen mit ihren unsicheren Lebensumständen umgehen. Welche individuellen und strukturellen Ressourcen helfen ihnen, die damit verbundenen Risiken zu bewältigen? Und wie wirkt sich dies auf das Gesundheitsverhalten der Betroffenen aus? Die Autorinnen umreissen einleitend den rechtlichen und kantonalen Kontext und analysieren danach auf der Grundlage von qualitativen Interviews mit vorläufig aufgenommenen MigrantInnen (mit F-Ausweis) und Sans-Papiers in den Kantonen Genf und Zürich deren individuelle Probleme und Ressourcen.
