Linguistic Politeness Across Boundaries
This volume includes 14 papers investigating politeness phenomena in Greece and Turkey, the cultural cross-roads of Europe, Asia and the Middle East. It reflects current research and provides observations of and findings in patterns of linguistic politeness in a geographical area other than the much studied English speaking ones. The book appeals to professionals and students interested in a broader perspective of language use in its social context.Articles in the collection are empirically rather than theoretically oriented and examine realisations of politeness in relation to social parameters. The chapters have been arranged in pairs (Greek/Turkish), treating the following related issues: firstly a more general ethnographic picture of the two societies, the variables of power/status in classroom and other interaction, solidarity in advice-giving and the use of approbatory expressions, service encounters and the differential use of language by males and females, the use of interruptions in television talk, and finally compliments.
Essays on Turkish Linguistics
This book contains 48 papers presented at the Fourteenth International Conference on Turkish Linguistics, held by Ankara University in August 6-8, 2008. The contributions to this conference cover a wide range of topics in theoretical, descriptive and applied linguistics relating to Turkish and Turkic languages in discussing a great variety of issues related to phonology and phonetics, morphology, syntax and semantics, pragmatics and discourse, language acquisition, language contact, and applied linguistics, as they have been grouped in this volume. Although the main focus of the volume is on Turkish linguistic issues, there are also a number of articles in different modern linguistic frameworks dealing with Turkic languages and Turkish dialects. Developing Contrastive Pragmatics
The present volume is a collection of papers on Contrastive Pragmatics, involving research on interlanguage and cross-cultural perspectives with a focus on second language acquisition contexts. The subdiscipline of pragmatics is seen from a multilingual and multicultural perspective thus contributing to an emerging field of study, i.e. intercultural pragmatics which can be made fruitful to second language teaching/learning and contrastive analysis. Turkey in World Politics

The United States and Turkey's Path to Europe
Turkey’s relations with the European Union is one of the most enigmatic topics in the European Studies literature. This country, kept at bay by Europeans for centuries, once came unexpectedly close to full-membership. The progress Turkey recorded in its European quest is difficult to account for with either Turkey’s performance or the positive attitude of the Europeans towards Turkey. In this book, Armağan Emre Çakır chronicles over six decades of US involvement in EU-Turkey relations. Shedding new light on the reasons, characteristics, transformation and relative importance of the US influence on Turkey-EU relations, he argues that Turkey’s quest for EU membership would not have advanced this far without the support from the United States. Çakır’s hypotheses and findings are grounded in original research that, among other things, includes interviews conducted on both sides of the Atlantic with key players, archival material and newspaper articles. English Studies from Archives to Prospects
This volume explores English Studies from the perspective of linguistics and applied linguistics. By examining developments within their selected topics, the authors of these 18 chapters provide a broad overview of English Studies as related to their specific points of interest. Topics range from the well-established, such as negation, grammaticalization, and the role of culture in learning English, to those that are currently being revisited or are considered relatively new, such as corpus analysis, English as a lingua franca, and third language acquisition. The size of things I
This book focuses on the role size plays in grammar. Under the umbrella term size fall the size of syntactic projections, the size of feature content, and the size of reference sets. The contributions in this first volume discuss size and structure building. The most productive research program in syntax where size plays a central role revolves around clausal complements. Part 1 of Volume I contributes to this program with papers that argue for particular structures of clausal complements, as well as papers that employ sizes of clausal complements to account for other phenomena. The papers in Part 2 of this volume explore the interaction between size and structure building beyond clausal complements, including phenomena in CP, vP, and NP domains. The contributions cover a variety of languages, many of which are understudied. The book is complemented by Volume II which discusses size effects in movement, agreement, and interpretation.
