Lahan merupakan sarana paling pokok dalam produksi pangan, dan di tengah laju pertumbuhan penduduk Indonesia—yang juga berarti meningkatnya kebutuhan pangan rakyat—ketersediaan lahan menjadi semakin penting. Apalagi dengan predikat negara agraris dan 44% rakyat yang bekerja di sektor pertanian, permasalahan akses lahan untuk petani harus lebih diperhatikan oleh semua pihak, terutama pemerintah. Meningkatnya jumlah petani gurem (petani yang memiliki luas lahan garapan di bawah 0,5 hektare) perlu segera dicarikan solusinya, dan itu baru salah satu contoh persoalan. This book contains papers presented at the International Workshop on Tropical Wetlands, held in Banjarmasin, Indonesia. This workshop discussed wetland mapping and characterization as well as wetland management for sustainable agriculture. This volume contains selected papers on tropical wetlands, more specifically, peatland, tidal land, and acid sulphate soils. This book presents an international overview of wetland and peatland mapping experiences from Indonesia, Congo, Brazil, Australia, and Scotland. Several innovative techniques are discussed, including integrated digital soil mapping and remote sensing techniques, as well as geodatabase processing and field surveying. This book further discussed tropical wetland management for agriculture as practiced in Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand. The contents of this book are suitable and should be a good reference for those who are involved in research, development, and management of tropical wetland, including academics, soil scientists, environmentalists, researchers, agriculturists, students, agri-businessmen, policy makers, land managers and farmers.
Indonesias food security and rural development are based on rice production, which provides the bulk of farm incomes and agricultural employment. When trade liberalization has a negative impact on rice farmers net incomes it may cause a decline in rice production. This, in turn, has a number of environmental, social and economic consequences. The end goal of this Integrated Assessment is to develop policy packages based on the findings of the study to mitigate the negative effects of trade liberalization and trade-related policies and promote the positive ones.
