Ludlow, Shropshire, is perhaps best known today for its Michelin-starred restaurants, its famous Food Festival and its attractive Georgian and medieval market town centre. But it has a less glorious claim to fame: the working classes of Ludlow lagged far behind the rest of the country when it came to their living conditions and, from Victorian times to the middle of the 20th century, they lacked most of the basic comforts. Typhoid was rife, countless houses had no access to running water, and outside toilets were shared by up to five families. When it is remembered that Ludlow's poor households often numbered eight or more residents, the degree of deprivation becomes clearer. Yet Ludlow's working classes battled on, largely uncomplainingly, until the local council finally agreed reluctantly to building the minimum number of council houses they could get away with, in the 1960s. This is a clear-sighted, well presented and fascinating account of the everyday lives of those living on the 'other' side of Ludlow.

Suicide

When is it okay for a person to kill themself? How have ideas about this changed over time, and how do they differ across cultures? How do Ireland's suicide rates, especially among its young men, compare to rates in other countries in Europe and beyond? Are we obsessed today with the idea of suicide? Is it possible to prevent suicide - and, if so, how? Should we try to prevent all suicides, or are there some that we should allow, regulate, even assist? Might some suicides be rational? How are families affected by suicide? What can they do if a family member is suicidal? How can they cope after a suicide? Are doctors able to identify which pregnant women are at high risk of killing themselves? Would allowing these women to have abortions make them less likely to kill themselves? In this wide-ranging review and analysis of historical and scientific research on the topic of suicide, authors Derek Beattie and Dr Patrick Devitt take an unflinching and often chillingly rational look at these questions and many others.

The Second World War brought for the people of Ludlow and the surrounding countryside a complex mixture of trials and temptations, tragedy and farce. By scouring the local press of the time and interviewing people who remember it all too vividly and express their memories with vigour, indignation and humour, Derek Beattie has produced an honest and powerful portrait of a town at war. The threat of invasion prompted the formation of the Home Guard, whose volunteers were hastily kitted out with ill-fitting uniforms and borrowed weapons: 'It was noted that one man found it impossible to keep his rifle at the slope and his trousers up simultaneously.' Extraordinary things happened: the ploughing...
