Shadows on the Flag

In the summer of 2004, private investigator Don Carling is hired by a wealthy client for what he foresees as a routine yet lucrative "follow and report" investigation of her husband. It's only a matter of days before he discovers just how wrong he is. Murder, intimidation, and a terrorist plot apparently tied to the US presidential election in November leave the PI struggling to make sense of it all. From Paris and London to New York and eventually the American Southwest, Carling and his undercover agent doggedly track the evidence trail, hoping to put together an irrefutable case that can be handed over to federal authorities. Their goal is in sight when unexpected circumstances befall them...

Enter Don Carling, a private investigator and former airline pilot. His task is twofold: one, to determine if the accidental verdicts are valid, and two, look for any evidence the deaths are connected. There are disturbing similarities, he finds, but no concrete evidence of a link. His investigation stalls...until a fourth captain is murdered, this time in London. A Bethnal Green Memoir

Millions of people are familiar with the 'East End' from television soaps and celebrity 'mockney' accents, but in this fascinating book Derek Houghton gives a colourful insight into life as a real 'East Ender'. Personal recollections and lively anecdotes are combined with a thorough social history to show a neighbourhood undergoing huge change. The memories recalled so openly by the author give a snapshot of a community characterised by contrasts. Neighbourliness and community spirit were highly valued, yet whole families often found themselves turned out onto the streets by ruthless landlords. The war provided a sudden rupture, both in the life of the author and his community. The relative peace of his time as an evacuee contrasts strongly with the destruction of Bethnal Green when the bombs rained down. The locations that provided the backdrop for Houghton's early life; the Hackney Empire, Pellicci's cafe and Kelly's Pie & Mash Shop, will be familiar to residents, and provide reference points for those just discovering the area. The stories and characters described so vividly are brought to life with a range of photographs.

SiGe, Ge, and Related Compounds 4: Materials, Processing, and Devices

Advanced semiconductor technology is depending on innovation and less on "classical" scaling. SiGe, Ge, and Related Compounds has become a key component in the arsenal in improving semiconductor performance. This symposium discusses the technology to form these materials, process them, FET devices incorporating them, Surfaces and Interfaces, Optoelectronic devices, and HBT devices.

There was Once a Street in Bethnal Green

There was Once a Street in Bethnal Green

Derek Houghton was born and bred in London's East End, Bethnal Green, when horses and carts were just as predominant on its streets as motorised vehicles. It was at a time when National Health was not even a dream, or any kind of benefit existed, the only benefit available was by taking the "Means Test" (Dole Money) that most East Enders were too proud to take. Poverty was never any stranger to their doors, unemployment was rife, and the pawnshops did a roaring trade. People then could walk the streets in safety, the streets were the children's playgrounds, where they played unhindered. As hard as times were, neighbours showed great compassion in helping each other. Each street was like a village, where everybody knew everyone else. World War II was to bring about an even stronger bond with each other. Above all, it was the love of a street - "Our Street."

Researchers in the ?eld of life sciences rely increasingly on information te- nology to extract and manage relevant knowledge. The complex computational and data management needs of life science research make Grid technologies an attractive support solution. However, many important issues must be addressed before the Life Science Grid becomes commonplace. The 1st International Life Science Grid Workshop (LSGRID 2004) was held in Kanazawa Japan, May 31–June 1, 2004. This workshop focused on life s- ence applications of grid systems especially for bionetwork research and systems biology which require heterogeneous data integration from genome to phenome, mathematical modeling and simulation ...
