Oxford Textbook of Clinical Pharmacology and Drug Therapy

Completely updated, the new edition of the Oxford Textbook of Clinical Pharmacology and Drug Therapy continues to provide medical students and clinicians with a unique insight into why drugs have their therapeutic effects, by presenting the basic pharmacological principles of pharmacology as they affect the patient. An understanding of these clinical pharmacological principles is essential for rational, safe, effective, and economical prescribing. Nausea and Vomiting: Mechanisms and Treatment

The following papers were presented at an international symposium on the mechanisms and treatment of nausea and vomiting in man held in Oxford in 1984. I believe that this meeting was the first occasion on which representatives from such a wide variety of scientific and clinical specialities had come together to review and debate the spectrum of the vomiting phenomenon. An attempt was made to put before an invited international audience all the pertinent facts on the different facets of the topic and then to encourage extensive discussion of the contentious issues. The first day of the meeting was devoted to the basic science ap proach to the problem and the second day to the more clinical a...

Psychopharmacology, Volume 2: Preclinical Psychopharmacology presents the mechanism of action of antidepressant drugs and neuroleptics. This book discusses the significance of the interaction between various neurotransmitter system in both biochemical and functional consequences of repeated drug administration. Organized into 12 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the effects of antidepressant drugs on norepinephrine metabolism. This text then discusses the different aspects of monoamine oxidase and its inhibitors. Other chapters consider the mechanism of action of lithium, which requires consideration of some of the general characteristics of periodic behavior. This book discusses as well the preclinical aspects of tranquilizers, particularly those dealing with benzodiazepines and non-benzodiazepines acting through the benzodiazepine receptor. The final chapter deals with the various behavioral and electrophysiological effects of cocaine in animals, which presumably reflect both local anesthetic properties and action on monoamine mechanisms. This book is a valuable resource for neuropharmacologists and practicing psychiatrists.
