Wen Xuan or Selections of Refined Literature, Volume I

A text of central importance to the Chinese literary tradition, the Wen xuan was compiled by Xiao Tong (501-531) and is the oldest surviving anthology of Chinese literature arranged by genre. This volume, the first of a planned eight-volume translation of the entire work, contains thoroughly annotated translations of the first section of the Wen xuan, the rhapsodies on the metropolises and capitals." Originally published in 1983. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Central American English

This volume is about the Anglophone creoles to be found on the Caribbean coast of Central America (Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama), and its offshore islands (Providencia, San Andrés and the Caymans) . The study of these Anglophone varieties is comparatively recent and based on current field work from Belize to Panama. One of the interesting features that emerges is the tentative map of diachronic and synchronic relationsships among the Anglophone creoles of the Caribbean, as illustrated partly by the lexicon and partly by grammatical constructions. The studies in this book are based on phonetic transcriptions of speech acts in their social and linguistic context.

Recently excavated artifacts and newly recovered texts are combined with traditional historical sources to trace the rise of the Sichuan district of eastern China from peripheral obscurity to central importance in the formation of the Chinese empire during the first millennium B.C. May ruffle the feathers of orthodox historians by emphasizing the multi-ethnic origin of Chinese culture, and the pivotal role of the state of Qin, reviled in China by two millennia of Confucians. Includes a substantial glossary without pronunciation. Paper edition (unseen), $22.95. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
