Academic performance is an unavoidable topic for educational scientists, instructional experts, students, faculty staff, academic managers, parents, families, and policymakers. While student academic performance is a topic of passionate discussion, it is also interconnected with both faculty staff and higher education institutions. Achieving academic success requires more than just the efforts of the student. The teaching profession in higher education increasingly demands measurable results to attest to its efficiency. And the need for the accountability required from higher education institutions tends to influence institutional strategic plans according to tangible and measurable goals. This book will aim to cover the different perspectives of academic performance, placing on the stage the different actors in higher education: students, faculty, and institutions.
Flavonoids are abundant secondary metabolites found in plants and fungi that have various roles in these organisms, including pigmentation, cell signalling, plant defence and inter-organism communication. Due to their abundance in nature, flavonoids are also important components of the human diet, and the last four decades have seen an intense study focused on the structure characterization of flavonoids and on their roles in mammal metabolism. This book reviews most of the well-established activities of flavonoids, and we also present more recent research studies on the area of flavonoids, including the chemical aspects of structure characterization of flavonoids, the biosynthesis of flavonoids in model plants as well as their role in abiotic stress situations and in agriculture, the role of flavonoids in metabolism and health and their importance in foods, from consumption to their use as bioactive components.
Central nervous system (CNS) tumors represent about 20% of pediatric cancer cases worldwide and are the leading cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality. In low- and middle-income countries, limited data suggests significant disparities in outcomes when compared to high-income countries. Nonetheless, this field is understudied and significant work needs to be done to further elucidate the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, and outcomes of this vulnerable population. In this Research Topic, we aim to describe recent advances in the biology, clinical, molecular, and health system characteristics of children and adolescents with CNS tumors. We welcome submissions of Original Researc...
This volume documents our growing understanding of the human major histocompatibility complex. The application of this information is ever more important as the limits of transplantation continue to be reduced, including the recent success of bone marrow transplantation between unrelated but closely matched individuals. In addition, the need to transfuse platelets in the face of immunologic barriers continues to challenge transfusion services. Thus, the serologic information summarized in this volume is essential for optimal patient care. At the same time, recombinant DNA technology has led to a revolution in our understanding of many aspects of basic biology. Among the advances has been the...
Individuals with disabilities often have difficulty accomplishing tasks, living independently, and utilizing information technologies; simple aspects of daily life taken for granted by non-disabled individuals. Assistive Technologies: Concepts, Methodologies, Tools, and Applications presents a comprehensive collection of research, developments, and knowledge on technologies that enable disabled individuals to function effectively and accomplish otherwise impossible tasks. These volumes serve as a crucial reference source for experts in fields as diverse as healthcare, information science, education, engineering, and human-computer interaction, with applications bridging multiple disciplines.
