The booklet provides an overview on the school-related issues involved in child abuse and neglect. Definitions, causes, and effects of abuse and neglect are reviewed in the first chapter; guidelines for identifying physical and sexual abuse, neglect, and emotional maltreatment are offered in chapter 2. Aspects of reporting abuse are noted as are issues involved in investigation and intervention. A discussion of prevention centers offering parenting and safety curricula and helping adolescent parents is also included. Issues for schools to address include staff criteria, school environment, and policies on corporal punishment. The final chapter presents ways in which educators can help set policy, establish procedures, and take individual action. (CL)
