Europeanization in a Global Context
This book puts forward an original approach to Europeanization in a global context. Following the world polity approach, the author establishes the missing link between global, European and domestic realms and reveals the multiplicity of dynamics and logics driving the reform process in European Union candidate countries. A range of other topics are investigated, including whether Europeanization is only driven by parochial strategic interests or by broader normative concerns and how we can make sense of the selectivity in domestic compliance with the EU without succumbing to binary thinking. Focusing on the critical case of Turkey, the book puts forward three varieties of Europeanization: strategic, normative and ritualized, which underlie the complex dynamics that drive the reform processes in EU candidate countries. Defending Memory in Global Politics
This book explores the securitization of memory in times of crisis using overlooked cases from the Global South and the Global North. Instead of focusing exclusively on national identities and state actors, it explores various identities, including substate and transnational actors, and their role in “defending memory” during times of crisis. Embracing a broad definition of conflict that includes mnemonic, societal and armed conflicts, the expert contributors engage with political trauma, demonstrating its power to evoke commemorations and other shared practices of collective remembrance, shaping and perpetuating collective memory, the construction of national and transnational identities, national interests and foreign policy behaviors. The book contributes to the fields of memory and trauma studies and ontological security in international relations. It will also be of interest to scholars and students of political science, sociology, international relations, history, nationalism and identity, international studies, cultural geography, social psychology, cultural studies and anthropology.
Meaning and Publicity
The papers collected in this volume all discuss the ways and extent to which the determinants of meaning must be public. In the philosophy of language there are currently two main traditions concerning the relationship between meaning and public phenomena. According to one tradition language is public in principle, so that there can be nothing to the meaning of linguistic expressions that cannot be accounted for in terms of the behaviour in context of linguistic subjects. According to the other tradition linguistic meaning is determined by the content of the mental representations that are expressed in overt speech acts. On such views, the properties of the mental are prior to language and linguistic meaning should be explained by appeal to mental concepts. There divergent traditions leave us with a question: Is linguistic meaning to be explained on the basis of a pre-linguistic biological or mental capacity which "goes public " in overt speech, or is it to be explained on the basis of pubic behaviour in context which "goes private "in thought, and which determines the contents of the mental?
