Didier Pittet has been the champion of hand hygiene. With the COVID-19 pandemic, his slogan “Adapt to Adopt” provoked a previously unimaginable response. In just a few weeks, everyone from perfume and wine makers to city pharmacists started to produce alcohol-based handrub, while YouTubers and humorists promoted its use. Heralds of the Adapt to Adopt strategy, they got creative in order to encourage hand hygiene on a mass scale. But reluctance, misunderstandings, and false ideas still subsist. Following on from *Clean Hands Save Lives*, this book explains why hand hygiene remains our primary weapon against epidemics, why alcohol is effective, why alcohol-based handrubs and gels are not dangerous, and why their distribution as a common good for humanity could become a model for global health, or even society in general. When we adapt, we feel invested, concerned, and involved. Nothing matters more for hand hygiene, which protects us and protects others.

This comprehensive volume provides a platform from which both major and minor infectious diseases related issues are addressed in-depth among this highly susceptible population. The book begins with an overview of infections in various modalities. This is followed by chapters on clinical disorders, etiologic agents, therapeutics, and infection prevention. Chapters include easy-to-follow figures and tables, radiologic images, and pictorial demonstrations of various disease states to familiarize and reacquaint the transplant clinicians and surgeons in practice and training, and those belonging to subspecialties providing supportive care for these patients. Discussions to enumerate the noninfectious causes that mimic infectious diseases; clinical relevance and effective utility of existing and emerging diagnostic tools are presented throughout the book. Authored by leaders in their fields, this book is the go-to reference for management of patients undergoing hematopoietic and solid organ transplantation.

Antimicrobial Resistance

Antimicrobial resistance has existed in nature long before the discovery of antibiotics. The mechanisms of resistance are prevalent among the bacterial population. Over a period of time and facilitated by indiscriminate usage of antibiotics, these mechanisms are transferred from one type of bacteria to another, including the pathogenic ones. In addition, the rate of discovery of novel antimicrobials is much slower than the rate of evolution of antimicrobial resistance. Therefore, there is a need for alternative strategies to control antimicrobial resistance to save lives. In this book, the novel strategies to combat antimicrobial resistance are described, emphasizing collaborative measures of control. We describe the concerted efforts undertaken by global communities to combat antimicrobial resistance in detail. The most efficient strategy could be a behavioral change towards indiscriminate consumption, usage, and prescription of antibiotics.
