In 1590, I sold my soul to the Devil. I was 23. Elizabeth Murray has been condemned to burn at the stake. As she awaits her fate, a strange, handsome man visits her cell. He offers her a deal: her soul in return for immortality, but what he offers is not a normal life. To survive Elizabeth must become Death itself. Elizabeth must ease the passing of all those who die, appearing at the point of death and using her compassion to guide them over the threshold. She accepts and, for 500 years, whirls from one death to the next, never stopping to think of the life she never lived. Until one day, everything changes. She - Death - falls in love. Desperate to escape the terms of her deal, she summons the man who saved her. He agrees to release her on one condition: that she gives him five lives. These five lives she must take herself, each one more difficult and painful than the last.

If a machine could predict how you would die, would you want to know? This is the tantalizing premise of This Is How You Die, the brilliant follow-up anthology to the self-published bestseller, Machine of Death. THIS IS HOW YOU DIE Stories of the Inscrutable, Infallible, Inescapable Machine of Death The machines started popping up around the world. The offer was tempting: with a simple blood test, anyone could know how they would die. But the machines didn't give dates or specific circumstances-just a single word or phrase. DROWNED, CANCER, OLD AGE, CHOKED ON A HANDFUL OF POPCORN. And though the predictions were always accurate, they were also often frustratingly vague. OLD AGE, it turned out, could mean either dying of natural causes, or being shot by an elderly, bedridden man in a botched home invasion. The machines held onto that old-world sense of irony in death: you can know how it's going to happen, but you'll still be surprised when it does. This addictive anthology--sinister, witty, existential, and fascinating--collects the best of the thousands of story submissions the editors received in the wake of the success of the first volume, and exceeds the first in every way.

The Works of Agency

In these essays, McCann develops a unified perspective on human action. Written over a period of 25 years, the essays provide a comprehensive survey of the major topics in contemporary action theory. In four sections, the book addresses the ontology of action; the foundations of action; intention, will and freedom; and practical rationality. McCann works out a compromise between competing perspectives on the individuation of action; explores the foundations of action and defends a volitional theory; argues for a libertarian view of both the formation and the execution of intention; and considers the question of consistency in rational intentions, as well as the relationship between practical and theoretical reasoning.

The True Adventures of the Rolling Stones

'Stanley Booth's book is the only one I can read and say, "Yeah, That's how it was"' KEITH RICHARDS 'An epic, behind-the-scenes record of life with the greatest rock band in the world' Observer The True Adventures of the Rolling Stones is the greatest book about the greatest rock 'n' roll band in history. It is also one of the most important books about the 1960s, capturing its uneasy mix of excess, violence and idealism in a way no other book does. Stanley Booth was with the Rolling Stones on their 1969 U.S. tour, which culminated in the notorious free concert at Altamont where a fan was murdered. Taking nearly fifteen years to write, The True Adventures of the Rolling Stones has emerged as 'the one authentic masterpiece of rock 'n' roll writing'.

In every account of historical significance, there is what history has recorded, there is what research determines the reasons for that historical account to be valid, and there are those people who believe that there are inaccuracies which need to be clarified. Some of those people may then seek to re-write history as they see it, so that those inaccuracies might be removed and the historical account corrected. Unknown to most people though, is the back story, the account of what really happened. Lastly, for those not satisfied with these explanations of written history, there is one other: There is the way we wish a historical event had happened, instead of the way it did. Here, we examine what history would have looked like if we had the ability to make that wish come true. Some people contend that we do not have the right to make changes to events of the past. Leave it alone, they would say. Take the results for what they are. The future should become what it did become. Fine, I say, but while the future may well be written in stone, must the past also? Do we have the right to ask this question: Does He, The One Who decrees it all, have the final and only say?
