PostDomestiCity is an inquiry and speculative exercise into the conditions of obsolescence in the post-industrial city, from a contemporary perspective. Working with three paradigmatic cases that were conceived from industrial logics—the Packard plant in Detroit, Lima’s PREVI neighbourhood, and theGrand’Mare complex in Rouen—, we explore alternative ways of reusing, reprogramming, and redensifying the built environment as alternatives to demolition. Relevant voices in the field of architecture share their approaches and visions of the future for the pre-existing city, helping us imagine post-domesticity in the current climate crisis and socio-technological context. This publication inquires into the future of post-industrial cities framing and speculating on different industrial contexts: archipelagos (Eibar), fabrics (Cobo Calleja), assemblies (Detroit). COLLECTIVE HOUSING: A MANUAL
Juan Herreros (Abalos & Herreros), Dietmar Eberle (Baumschlager & Eberle), Wiel Arets, Frits van Dongen (Architecten Cie), Felix Claus (Claus en Kaan), Jacob van Rijs (MVRDV), and Jose Morales were among ten tutors that taught a series of intensive housing workshops that included a group of 34 international architects and students during the Collective Housing Master Course of 2006. The book is divided according to professor and features professional work from the master architects, as well as dozens of student projects.
Souto de Moura
"I look beyond solution; I look for an expression."--Eduardo Souto de Moura The architect Eduardo Souto de Moura (b. 1952) has won many accolades, including the 2011 Pritzker Architecture Prize. Based in Porto, Souto de Moura studied under Fernando Távora and worked under fellow Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza, with whom he continues to collaborate. Souto de Moura established his own practice in 1980, and his wide-ranging influences, including Mies van der Rohe and Donald Judd, can be seen in the stunning variety of his work, from his acclaimed private houses, to the striking Paula Rego Museum in Cascais and the Braga Municipal Stadium, to his work in historical contexts such as the Convento das Bernardas in Tavira. This beautifully illustrated retrospective provides the most comprehensive account of Souto de Moura's career to date. Drawings, notes and sketches from his archive, and newly commissioned photographs complement essays by scholars and prominent architects that trace Souto de Moura's career, contextualize his work within the larger trends of contemporary international architectural culture, and highlight the originality of his design strategy.
New Geographies
New Geographies journal aims to examine the emergence of the “geographic,” a new but for the most part latent paradigm in design today—to articulate it and to bring it to bear effectively on the social role of design. Although much of the analysis of this context in architecture, landscape, and urbanism derives from social anthropology, human geography, and economics, the journal aims to extend these arguments to the impact of global changes on the spatial dimension, whether in terms of the emergence of global spatial networks, global cities, or nomadic practices, and how these inform design practices today. Through essays and design projects, the journal aims to identify the relationship between the very small and the very large, and intends to open up discussions on the expanded role of the designer, with an emphasis on disciplinary reframings, repositionings, and attitudes.
COLABORATORIO: FABRICACIÓN DIGITAL Y ARQUITECTURAS COLABORATIVAS
En 2009 Almudena Ribot, Ignacio Borrego, Javier Garcia-Germán y Diego Garcia-Setién se unieron para formar CoLaboratorio, una nueva unidad docente en la Escuela de Arquitectura de la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid.
