The Circadian Clock

With the invitation to edit this volume, I wanted to take the opportunity to assemble reviews on different aspects of circadian clocks and rhythms. Although most c- tributions in this volume focus on mammalian circadian clocks, the historical int- duction and comparative clocks section illustrate the importance of various other organisms in deciphering the mechanisms and principles of circadian biology. Circadian rhythms have been studied for centuries, but only recently, a mole- lar understanding of this process has emerged. This has taken research on circadian clocks from mystic phenomenology to a mechanistic level; chains of molecular events can describe phenomena with remarkable accuracy...

Poverty in Albania

Annotation During the ten years of reform, Albania has been buffeted by set backs which led fully 40% of respondents to indicate that socioeconomic conditions have worsened during that period. While informal coping mechanisms have been developed in many communities, these are under stress and threaten to give way.

Glial ⇔ Neuronal Signaling

Glial Neuronal Signaling fills a need for a monograph/textbook to be used in advanced courses or graduate seminars aimed at exploring glial-neuronal interactions. Even experts in the field will find useful the authoritative summaries of evidence on ion channels and transporters in glia, genes involved in signaling during development, metabolic cross talk and cooperation between astrocytes and neurons, to mention but a few of the timely summaries of a wide range of glial-neuronal interactions. The chapters are written by the top researchers in the field of glial-neuronal signaling, and cover the most current advances in this field. The book will also be of value to the workers in the field of cell biology in general. When we think about the brain we usually think about neurons. Although there are 100 billion neurons in mammalian brain, these cells do not constitute a majority. Quite the contrary, glial cells and other non-neuronal cells are 10-50 times more numerous than neurons. This book is meant to integrate the emerging body of information that has been accumulating, revealing the interactive nature of the brain's two major neural cell types, neurons and glia, in brain function.

Mapping and Sequencing the Human Genome

There is growing enthusiasm in the scientific community about the prospect of mapping and sequencing the human genome, a monumental project that will have far-reaching consequences for medicine, biology, technology, and other fields. But how will such an effort be organized and funded? How will we develop the new technologies that are needed? What new legal, social, and ethical questions will be raised? Mapping and Sequencing the Human Genome is a blueprint for this proposed project. The authors offer a highly readable explanation of the technical aspects of genetic mapping and sequencing, and they recommend specific interim and long-range research goals, organizational strategies, and funding levels. They also outline some of the legal and social questions that might arise and urge their early consideration by policymakers.

Living cells have evolved many ways of coping with metabolic events and environmental influences that damage DNA. These mechanisms, and the frequent progression to cancer that results when they go awry, are rev iewed in this volume by authors from over sixty of the world's leading laboratories. The topics discussed include DNA repair, mutagenesis and other damage-tolerance functions, checkpoint control, apoptosis, and adaptation. They draw from studies on human and yeast cells. Current, but with a valuable historical perspective, this volume has the depth and lasting value typical of this most prestigious series and is esse ntial reading for investigators of DNA replication, cell cycle control, and tumorigenesis.

Over 2,000 manuscripts accessioned between 1991 and 1995 are described and indexed in this latest volume of the Catalogue of Additions. They range from a 9th-century fragment of St Aldhelm's work to papers of the contemporary author Edward Upward and the economist Sir Roy Harrod. The Trumbull family papers in 380 volumes are the largest of the historical collections catalogued here, whilst modern composers are especially well represented by the comprehensive archives of Cornelius Cardew, Humphrey Searle, Andrzei Panufnik and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. Notable single volumes include two Books of Hours of the 14th and 15th centuries and Sir William Dugdale's "Book of Monuments" (1640-1641).
