This volume contains the proceedings of the workshop on Variational and Optimal Control Problems on Unbounded Domains, held in memory of Arie Leizarowitz, from January 9-12, 2012, in Haifa, Israel. The workshop brought together a select group of worldwide experts in optimal control theory and the calculus of variations, working on problems on unbounded domains. The papers in this volume cover many different areas of optimal control and its applications. This book presents a comprehensive overview of the recently developed L1 adaptive control theory, including detailed proofs of the main results. The key feature of the L1 adaptive control theory is the decoupling of adaptation from robustness. The architectures of L1 adaptive control theory have guaranteed transient performance and robustness in the presence of fast adaptation, without enforcing persistent excitation, applying gain-scheduling, or resorting to high-gain feedback.
This Proceedings contains the papers presented at the IFAC Symposium on Robust Control Design held in Prague on 21 - 23 June 2000. The technical program included 21 sessions on robust control and related topics in identification and signal processing. The methods presented in these sessions included linear matrix inequalities, polynomial techniques, sliding modes, optimal control, fuzzy and adaptive control. Attention was also paid to linear as well as nonlinear systems. The highlights of the technical program were two plenary lectures by J. Geromel (Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Brazil) and H. Kwakernaak (University of Twente, The Netherlands).
