Finite Volumes for Complex Applications VI Problems & Perspectives

Finite volume methods are used for various applications in fluid dynamics, magnetohydrodynamics, structural analysis or nuclear physics. A closer look reveals many interesting phenomena and mathematical or numerical difficulties, such as true error analysis and adaptivity, modelling of multi-phase phenomena or fitting problems, stiff terms in convection/diffusion equations and sources. To overcome existing problems and to find solution methods for future applications requires many efforts and always new developments. The goal of The International Symposium on Finite Volumes for Complex Applications VI is to bring together mathematicians, physicists and engineers dealing with Finite Volume Techniques in a wide context. This book, divided in two volumes, brings a critical look at the subject (new ideas, limits or drawbacks of methods, theoretical as well as applied topics).

This book addresses the fascinating phenomena associated with nonlinear waves and spatio-temporal patterns. These appear almost everywhere in nature from sand bed forms to brain patterns, and yet their understanding still presents fundamental scientific challenges. The reader will learn here, in particular, about the current state-of-the art and new results in: Nonlinear water waves: resonance, solitons, focusing, Bose-Einstein condensation, as well as and their relevance for the sea environment (sea-wind interaction, sand bed forms, fiber clustering) Pattern formation in non-equilibrium media: soap films, chimera patterns in oscillating media, viscoelastic Couette-Taylor flow, flow in the w...

Dispersive Shallow Water Waves

This monograph presents cutting-edge research on dispersive wave modelling, and the numerical methods used to simulate the propagation and generation of long surface water waves. Including both an overview of existing dispersive models, as well as recent breakthroughs, the authors maintain an ideal balance between theory and applications. From modelling tsunami waves to smaller scale coastal processes, this book will be an indispensable resource for those looking to be brought up-to-date in this active area of scientific research. Beginning with an introduction to various dispersive long wave models on the flat space, the authors establish a foundation on which readers can confidently approa...

Engineering Statics with MATLAB®

This text makes use of symbolic algebra and vector-matrix algebra to demonstrate a new approach to learning statics. Symbolic solutions are obtained, together with the types of solutions covered in other texts, so that students can see the advantages of this new approach. This innovative text is an extension of second-generation vector Statics courses to a new, third-generation matrix-vector Statics course, a course that addresses deformable as well as rigid bodies and employs MATLAB®. MATLAB® is used as a “calculator” whose built-in functions are used to solve statics problems. This text uses vectors and matrices to solve both statically determinate rigid body problems and statically indeterminate problems for deformable bodies. The inclusion of statically indeterminate problems is unique to this text. It is made possible by using symbolic algebra and a new, simplified vector-matrix formulation that combines the equations of equilibrium, the homogeneous solutions to those equations, and a description of the flexibilities found in the deformable elements of a structure to solve directly for the unknown forces/moments.

General Quantum Numerical Analysis

This book is focused on the qualitative theory of general quantum calculus, the modern name for the investigation of calculus without limits. It centers on designing, analysing and applying computational techniques for general quantum differential equations. The quantum calculus or q-calculus began with F.H. Jackson in the early twentieth century, but this kind of calculus had already been worked out by Euler and Jacobi. Recently, it has aroused interest due to high demand of mathematics that models quantum computing and the connection between mathematics and physics. Quantum calculus has many applications in different mathematical areas such as number theory, combinatorics, orthogonal polynomials, basic hyper-geometric functions and other sciences such as quantum theory, mechanics and the theory of relativity. The authors summarize the most recent contributions in this area. General Quantum Numerical Analysis is intended for senior undergraduate students and beginning graduate students of engineering and science courses. The twelve chapters in this book are pedagogically organized, each concluding with a section of practical problems.

Quantum Computation presents the mathematics of quantum computation. The purpose is to introduce the topic of quantum computing to students in computer science, physics and mathematics who have no prior knowledge of this field. The book is written in two parts. The primary mathematical topics required for an initial understanding of quantum computation are dealt with in Part I: sets, functions, complex numbers and other relevant mathematical structures from linear and abstract algebra. Topics are illustrated with examples focussing on the quantum computational aspects which will follow in more detail in Part II. Part II discusses quantum information, quantum measurement and quantum algorithm...
