Nigerian playwright DIPO KALEJAIYE relates an educator and writer’s experience of living in Nigeria and the United States in his latest memoir, Some Memories of California. Without equivocation, this book should serve as an informative read for lovers of memoirs exploring wit and adroitness to make peculiar humane concerns accessible to readers.
There are a total of nine contributors to this Anthology. All are immigrants from Africa to America, except two people; Cyril Obi and Chinwe Azubike, who live and work in Europe. The collection thus is a reflection of sundry temperaments in poetic art. Non of the writers is indeed writing for the first time. They have all had poems and other forms of writings published in some form of media. However, non also has as yet become towering. Their poems are rich in personal and collective experiences and artistic devices. While some are urbane, some still exhume the rural qualities of African life and yet others achieve a blend of both the urban and the rural. In all, the poems are interesting and the annotations make an understanding of the collection a lot easier.
The book is a collection of nine letters addressed to former high school classmates. It uses these letters as mirrors into the nostalgic past of a 'grammar school' (high school) experience at the onset of the postcolonial era in Nigeria. The aim of the book is to show the routine antics of classmates as 'informal' education and that this, in conjunction with 'formal' education, make a total high school experience. The first part of the book, the introduction, shows the process of recalling the experiences contained in the letters. The second part is the individual letters, among them are: 'A letter to Aranmsko, ' which shows adventure as a form of learning and the trepidation of the 'curse' he receives from a religious studies teacher. 'A letter to Sosorakota' portrays the controversial topic of sex during the teenage years. The third part of the book, the conclusion, asserts that the Letters reveal aspects of human character such as kindness, trust, hope, and fear
This volume brings together fifteen scholars from Africa, Europe and the United States to explore how Africa is represented in and through the performing arts and cinema. Essays include discussions of Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun, American influences on Nollywood, Nigerian video films, the representation of women in cinema, African dance in the diaspora, children’s music, and media portrayals of savagery from pop cinema through news reports of Ferguson, Missouri. Using a variety of methodologies and approaches, the contributors consider how African societies and cultures have been represented to themselves, to the continent at large, and in the diaspora. The volume represents an extended dialogue between African scholars and artists about the challenges of representing themselves and their respective societies within and without Africa. Many of the contributors are scholar-practitioners, offering practical guides on how to approach these performance and media forms as artists. As such, this book will serve as both model and building block for the next generation of representors, students, and audiences.
