In the late eighteenth century, the Russian Empire opened the grasslands of southern Ukraine to agricultural settlement by new colonists, among them Prussian Mennonites. Mennonite colonization was one aspect of the empire’s consolidation and modernization of its multi-ethnic territory. Historians of Russia were relative latecomers to the field of environmental history. Yet, in the past decade, the exploration of Russian environmental history has burgeoned. Thinking Russia's History Environmentally showcases collaboration amongst an international set of scholars who focus on the contribution that the study of Russian environments makes to the global environmental field. The present collection of some eighty old Kalmyk-script notes and letters has lain almost unknown in the Moravian Unitas Fratrum (United Brethren) Archives for nearly 200 years. They are requests made to the young Isaac Schmidt (later to become the foremost scholar of Mongolian, but then manager of the general store in Sarepta), among the German colonists in Southern Russia amidst the Buddhist-Kalmyk herdsmen. The texts include simple goods orders as well as letters from Prince Erdeni Taishi and his sister Tsebeq, touching on commercial, administrative and military matters.

Imperial Odessa: Peoples, Spaces, Identities is a book about a cosmopolitan city written by a cosmopolitan scholar with a literary flair. Evrydiki Sifneos conceives Odessa as more of a fin-de siècle east Mediterranean port-metropolis than as a provincial port-city of the Russian Empire in the nineteenth century due to two of its principal characteristics: its function as a hub of international trade and travel, and the multi-ethnic character of its inhabitants.
