Tentativas para prolongar a juventude têm sido realizadas há muito séculos. Crenças equivocadas sobre o processo de envelhecimento fazem parte da nossa cultura há milênios. Ainda existem pessoas que adotam panaceias como se fossem a fonte da juventude, acreditando que elas podem reverter o processo de envelhecimento. Cientistas de todos os lugares estão estudando o envelhecimento, e os resultados de suas pesquisas poderão sugerir formas de retardar o seu avanço, adiando e prevenindo doenças e melhorando a qualidade de vida. Muitas dessas pesquisas estão progredindo e têm potencial de algum dia fornecer métodos para diminuir a intensidade desse inevitável declínio e melhorar a saúde e a longevidade das pessoas.
