Minimally Invasive Spine Interventions

This book is an up-to-date guide to the techniques and devices that may be used when performing minimally invasive spine interventions. The indications for such procedures, which offer various advantages over open surgery, continue to expand, and the aim of the book is to equip spine interventionists with the knowledge required in order to achieve optimal clinical outcomes consistently. After discussion of all aspects of patient preparation, conventional minimally invasive procedures for disorders of the cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacral spine are thoroughly reviewed. Attention then turns to more advanced techniques and devices, including percutaneous epidural neurolysis, foraminoplasty, the L’DISQ device for disc decompression, transforaminal epiduroscopic laser annuloplasty (TELA), trans-sacral endoscopic laser decompression (SELD), percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy (PELD), and minimally invasive lumbar decompression (MILD). In addition to full description and illustration of treatment methods, guidance is provided on indications, contraindications, potential complications, and postoperative care.

Psycho-social Career Meta-capacities

This book introduces a coherent perspective on the self-regulatory career meta-capacities that individuals, as career agents, need to successfully manage their career development in a boundaryless occupational world. Enriched by empirical data and case studies by subject specialists in the fields, it serves as a cutting-edge benchmark for specialists, professionals and post-graduate students in the careers field to study. This book allows an in-depth view of the most recent research trends on the critical psycho-social constructs influencing the adaptation, adaptivity, adaptability and employability of individuals in a turbulent, uncertain and chaotic work world. In addition, it offers the practising professional new perspectives of career constructs and measures to consider in career counseling and guidance for the contemporary career.

Lectures on Quantum Mechanics

Lectures on Quantum Mechanics

This set of lecture notes on quantum mechanics aims to teach, in a simple and straightforward manner, the basic theory behind the subject, drawing on examples from all fields of physics to provide both background as well as context. The self-contained book includes a review of classical mechanics and some of the necessary mathematics. Both the standard fare of quantum mechanics texts — the harmonic oscillator, the hydrogen atom, angular momentum as well as topics such as symmetry with a discussion on periodic potentials, the relativistic electron, spin and scattering theory are covered. Approximation methods are discussed with a view to applications; these include stationary perturbation theory, the WKB approximation, time dependent perturbations and the variational principle. Together, the seventeen chapters provide a very comprehensive introduction to quantum mechanics. Selected problems are collected at the end of each chapter in addition to the numerous exercises sprinkled throughout the text. The book is written in a simple and elegant style, and is characterized by clarity, depth and excellent pedagogical organization.

Symmetry-Adapted Basis Sets

Symmetry-Adapted Basis Sets

In theoretical physics, theoretical chemistry and engineering, one often wishes to solve partial differential equations subject to a set of boundary conditions. This gives rise to eigenvalue problems of which some solutions may be very difficult to find. For example, the problem of finding eigenfunctions and eigenvalues for the Hamiltonian of a many-particle system is usually so difficult that it requires approximate methods, the most common of which is expansion of the eigenfunctions in terms of basis functions that obey the boundary conditions of the problem. The computational effort needed in such problems can be much reduced by making use of symmetry-adapted basis functions. The conventional method for generating symmetry-adapted basis sets is through the application of group theory, but this can be difficult. This book describes an easier method for generating symmetry-adapted basis sets automatically with computer techniques. The method has a wide range of applicability, and can be used to solve difficult eigenvalue problems in a number of fields. The book is of special interest to quantum theorists, computer scientists, computational chemists and applied mathematicians.
