The nearly forgotten history and complex career paths of the first Canadian women scientists.
This book offers new theoretical insights into religious, esoteric, and philosophical practices and narratives that deal with "intentional transformative experiences." Exceptional life-changing experiences are often believed to be beyond the individual's control--they are thought to "simply happen." However, many individuals actively and self-reflectively search for transformative experiences. Intentional Transformative Experiences provides analyses of such intentionally sought experiences in different spiritual, religious, and esoteric milieus. Case studies range from South and Central Asian traditions to Western esoteric practices, compare autobiographical narratives of self-cultivation, a...
Why language ability remains resilient and how it shapes our lives. We acquire our native language, seemingly without effort, in infancy and early childhood. Language is our constant companion throughout our lifetime, even as we age. Indeed, compared with other aspects of cognition, language seems to be fairly resilient through the process of aging. In Changing Minds, Roger Kreuz and Richard Roberts examine how aging affects language—and how language affects aging. By highlighting the commonalities across a range of disciplines, this volume provides a unique and broad-based perspective on communication and ageing. Centring on three topics - cognition, language and relationships - the book explores the individual areas as well as the ways in which they intersect. It brings to light the implications of individual differences among members of the elderly population as they affect communication, and illustrates the positive as well as the negative effects of the ageing process on language production, relational satisfaction an
Concept of Adjustment:- Adjustment refers to changes in our ways of behaving to meet the changing demands of our environments. Obviously, Adjustment can be defined as a person’s interaction with his environment. Each person constantly strives to meet his needs and reach his goals. At the same time he is under pressure from the environment to behave in certain ways. Adjustment involves the reconciliation of personal and environmental demands. Interaction means mutual bearing or influence. Every person is influenced by these surroundings. And each has same effect on the particular environmental settings of which he is a part. The relative amount of influence varies from setting to setting and from time to time within a particular setting. Sometimes an individual is more influenced than influential, and sometimes it is the other way around. Environment refers to everything external to the person with which he is in some relation. In the study of adjustment, the unit of study is frequently a social group. For example, the individual is studied in relation to his family or to the people with whom he work.
