A strong supply of people with science, technology, engineering and maths skills is important for the UK to compete internationally. The starting point is a good education for children and young people in science and maths. The numbers studying separate GCSE biology, chemistry and physics (known as 'Triple Science' when studied together) have risen by almost 150% between 2004-05 and 2009-10. Attainment has also improved as take-up has increased. Nevertheless, there is a risk that this progress will not be maintained. The trademark hesitations, asides and parentheses that mark his lines derive from speech (a Hemingway wife is ``one of the specialty, I am/going to risk saying, dishes in the big man's/moveable feast'') and are all measured out and weighed in beautifully constructed sentences. Amendments to the Merchant Marine Acts
Considers. S. 1956, to amend the Merchant Marine Act of 1936 to allow subsidized vessels to forego subsidy repayments if a majority of its miles are logged between Alaska and British Columbia. S. 2618, to authorize Commerce Dept to acquire older merchant marine vessels to be refurbished in exchange for more modern vessels. S. 3018, to authorize the Maritime Administration to advance mortgage payments on behalf of vessels insured under Federal mortgage guarantee programs. S. 3188, to amend the Merchant Marine Act of 1920 to prohibit Canadian vessels from transporting merchandise between the continental U.S. and Alaska. S. 3189, to allow only ships rebuilt entirely in the U.S. to engage in coast-to-coast trade.
Remembering Northrop Frye
