Archaeological exploration of the Arabic Peninsula is not a new phenomenon, but only in the last two decades or so, has it received the scholary attention it deserves. Surveys are now taking place in the entire region, and new excavations have begun in almost every country on the peninsula. This collection of articles on Arabian archaeology takes its place among many of the recent works on the subject, and the articles presented here contributes with both materials and ideas to the field of study. Ayla
Featured are thirty-seven illustrations that highlight the magnificence that was the great Islamic port of Ayla on the Gulf of Aqaba. The site is located in modern Aqaba, Jordan and has been excavated by the Oriental Institute under the directorship of Donald Whitcomb since 1986.
Quseir Al-Qadim 1980
This volume presents the results of the second season of excavations, during which a Roman merchant's "villa" and part of the central administrative buildings were excavated. A large section of the Islamic town was also cleared, within which were artifacts ranging from China to West Africa. This report presents the excavations and the artifacts recovered; these latter include the pottery, glass, lamps, Roman ostraca and Arabic letters, fauna, flora, shells, and organic materials, the latter including textiles, wood, leather, and basketry. Also included are brief reports on the survey of Bir Kareim, the site of a Roman gold mining settlement and shrine about 20km from the port, and a discussion of the old mosques in the modern town of Quseir.
