Understanding the stars is the bedrock of modern astrophysics. Stars are the source of life. The chemical enrichment of our Milky Way and of the Universe withallelementsheavierthanlithiumoriginatesintheinteriorsofstars.Stars arethe tracersofthe dynamics ofthe Universe, gravitationallyimplying much more than meets the eye. Stars ionize the interstellar medium and re-ionized the early intergalactic medium. Understanding stellar structure and evolution is fundamental. While stellar structure and evolution are understood in general terms, we lack important physical ingredients, despite extensive research during recent decades.Classicalspectroscopy, photometry, astrometryandinterferometryof stars ha...
Annotation Papers from a July 2001 meeting report on the outcome of two decades of scientific collaboration between Flemish and South African researchers in the field of small-amplitude short-period variables and long-period pulsating stars. Some specific topics include global campaigns on Delta Scuti stars, photometric and spectroscopic reduction techniques, period changes in V 1162 Orionis, and autocorrelation analysis of Hipparcos photometry of short-period A and B stars. Other topics include oscillating blue stragglers in galactic globular clusters, and photometry of Delta Serpentis. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
IAU C196 coincided with the 8 June 2004 transit of Venus, producing the exciting, eclectic mix that can be found in these proceedings: the amazing history of the English North-country astronomers of the seventeenth century; the AU at a precision of 1.4 m; the explanation for the infamous black drop effect; a possible Mayan observation of a transit of Venus in the thirteenth century; the vexed question of leap seconds and time scales; history, distances, parallaxes, the solar system at exquisite precision and future space missions that will revolutionise astronomy.
Annotation Papers from an August 1999 meeting are arranged in sections on the present and future of large-scale surveys, variability of high- luminosity stars, cepheids and RR Lyrae stars, the Blazhko phenomenon, theoretical models of classical pulsating stars, variables close to the main sequence, and pulsating white dwarfs and subdwarfs. Specific topics include nonradial modes in RR Lyrae stars, nonlinear pulsations of convective stellar models, oscillation of rapidly rotating stars, and instabilities in very massive stars. Szabados is affiliated with Konkoly Observatory of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Hungary. Kurtz is affiliated with the department of astronomy at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. Our understanding of stars has grown significantly due to recent advances in asteroseismology, the stellar analog of helioseismology, the study of the Sun's acoustic wave oscillations. Using ground-based and satellite observatories to measure the frequency spectra of starlight, researchers are able to probe beneath a star's surface and map its interior structure. This volume provides a wide-ranging and up-to-date overview of the theoretical, experimental and analytical tools for carrying out front-line research in stellar physics using asteroseismological observations, tools and inferences. Chapters from seven eminent scientists in residence at the twenty-second Canary Islands Winter School of Astrophysics examine the interior of our Sun relative to data collected from distant stars, how to measure the fundamental parameters of single field stars, diffusion processes, and the effects of rotation on stellar structures. The volume also provides detailed treatments of modeling and computing programs, providing astronomers and graduate students a practical, methods-based guide.
