Advancing Democracy

As we approach the fiftieth anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education (1954), it is important to consider the historical struggles that led to this groundbreaking decision. Four years earlier in Texas, the Sweatt v. Painter decision allowed blacks access to the University of Texas's law school for the first time. Amilcar Shabazz shows that the development of black higher education in Texas--which has historically had one of the largest state college and university systems in the South--played a pivotal role in the challenge to Jim Crow education. Shabazz begins with the creation of the Texas University Movement in the 1880s to lobby for equal access to the full range of graduate and profess...

I was inspired to compile this book after I saw a beautifully presented book of wedding photos and stories gathered by the Peachester Historical Society. I decided to collect wedding photos of brides or couples who were either born in Hughenden, married, or had been living and working in the Hughenden area up until December 1960. The photographs show the fashions of the time, gradually changing until the Second World War, when in some cases brides were married in street clothes. The weddings had to be arranged around the time the groom could obtain leave, and the wedding party could acquire enough petrol coupons to travel. Mary Sladden remembers having to save up her food coupons and swap th...

Redialing Yo Number

Sage Hayes affectionately known as Sister Hey loved her job at Newfound Baptist Church in Sandersville. Newfound Missionary Baptist was the largest church in the area and was well known throughout the community for having good preaching, good singing, and delicious, southern style food. It seems as though everyone in the community knew each other or a family member. Sage was the kind of woman that loved attention and sought it in different ways. She worked with some of the most creative and innovative people at Newfound. Sage loved being a support system for the staff at Newfound, especially Daniel Morgan. Daniel was the creative mind behind the Yahweh Food Bank which fed more than 200 famil...
